A 29-year-old British educator has pleaded guilty on Monday (Feb 1) to molesting a nearly four-year-old female student at a learning centre in the west of Singapore.
The court heard that the man, Richard Christopher Monks, molested the girl in October 2018, when she was enrolled at the centre as his student.
At the time of the offence, Monks was 27, and the student was three years and 11 months old.

During a class at a language training and literacy centre, a reading specialist molested a three-year-old pupil while the children watched a video.
British national Richard Christopher Monks, 29, pleaded guilty on Monday (Feb 1) to one charge of using criminal force to outrage a minor's modesty. He had originally been set for a trial but decided to admit to the charge. The court heard that Monks worked at a language centre that was not named in court documents. The students there were aged between two-and-a-half and 12.
The victim was 3 years and 11 months old at the time of the offence and attended Monks' lessons at the centre every Saturday, calling him "Teacher Richard".
Teacher from top school committed indecent acts on female student, 15, during 'relationship'
A teacher from one of Singapore's top schools entered into a relationship with a female student and committed indecent acts on her at his workplace.
A male teacher was charged in court on Tuesday (June 23) over allegations that he had recorded 168 upskirt videos at the secondary school where he taught.
The man is accused of committing the offences between April 2015 and July 2018.
He was charged with six counts of insulting a woman's modesty. Court documents did not state if the videos were of his students or colleagues.

A teacher is accused of taking more than 160 upskirt videos of women at the school he taught at over the course of more than three years.
The 47-year-old man was charged on Tuesday (Jun 23) with six counts of insulting a woman's modesty and two counts of possessing obscene films. His name and the name of the school he taught at cannot be revealed, due to gag orders imposed by the court to protect the identities of the victims.
The teacher was charged with intruding on the privacy of multiple women in the school between April 2015 and July 2018, by recording 168 upskirt videos of women with his mobile phone.

Teacher gave gifts to underage female student before performing sexual acts on her
A married secondary school teacher, who was aware that one of his students was infatuated with him, showered the 14-year-old girl with gifts, such as a watch and an iPhone, before performing sexual acts on her.
A district court heard that the man even lied to the minor, claiming that he reciprocated her feelings even though he felt no romantic attachment to her.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Ho Jiayun said: "Ultimately, he took advantage of her youthful affection for him... and saw her merely as a means to satisfy his own sexual desire."

Chan Cheng, a 59-year-old Singaporean, was found guilty last week of five charges of outrage of modesty relating to five victims. His offences took place in 1999 during a three-day school camp, where he worked as a consultant.
On Monday, seven other similar charges relating to four other victims were taken into consideration for sentencing.

The 33-year-old Filipino, who cannot be named due to a gag order to protect the victim's identity, had been found guilty of four counts of molestation last month by District Judge Chay Yuen Fatt. It followed a five-day trial, during which the court heard that the girl was left so traumatised by the incidents that she hid under a desk and cut her wrists with a pair of scissors.
The teacher first molested her on June 25, 2016, after pointing out that the way she placed her cello against her body was incorrect.

Ms Celesta Ee Qiying, a co-curricular activity staff member of Meridian Secondary School, had confided about her methamphetamine consumption to Khairul Naim Mohamad Nasir in 2016. He was still a student of the school then.
In a statement, a Ministry of Education (MOE) spokesman said: "Once MOE was informed of the investigation, we suspended Ms Celesta Ee from duty in September 2017 so that she had no contact with the school. She has since been dismissed from service."

A secondary school art teacher who engaged in sex talk with a student and claimed trial to molestation charges was found guilty on Monday (July 16).
District Judge John Ng convicted the 38-year-old of three charges of outrage of modesty following a ten-day trial. The judge said he was convinced of the accused’s guilt, based on the “totality of the evidence”.
The teacher, who has been suspended from duty since February 2016, will be back in court on Aug 14, when he is expected to be sentenced. He is out on bail of S$15,000. He taught at a co-ed school in western Singapore and cannot be named to protect his victim’s identity.

Questioned by his school principal the day after he allegedly molested a Secondary Two student last February, the art teacher apparently admitted he had touched the boy’s thighs.
Taking the stand on the first day of the molestation trial, the school principal said the 37-year-old accused – who cannot be named to protect the identity of the boy – “appeared to be shocked and remorseful” when asked to explain what had happened. He “knew that he had gone overboard… but wanted to (apologise) to the student (and his) parents”, the principal testified.

Benjamin James Henry, a 35-year-old Briton, apparently retorted by saying, “Get real, I am gay!”, when his accuser confronted him right after the alleged incident at about midnight on June 17, 2017.
The accuser, a woman in her 50s who works in the healthcare sector, testified at the opening of the trial on Thursday (May 2) that she was leaving the party with her British husband when she felt a hand running down her back to her buttock.

A mother had to choke back tears in court on Monday (Feb 12), when she recounted the moment when her son told her his male teacher behaved inappropriately towards him while they were in school.
On Feb 17 in 2016, the art teacher, then 36, and the boy, who was in 13 and in Secondary 2, were the only ones left in the school’s art room. The teacher then allegedly jabbed the boy’s underarm, squeezed the boy’s chest, and put his hands into the boy’s shorts to touch his buttocks and groin. “My heart ached,” the mother of two said on the witness stand, her voice shaking. “It pained me to know that my son had to go through such an unpleasant experience.”
The teacher, who cannot be named to protect the minor’s identity and who has been ordered to stop his teaching duties, faces three charges of outraging the boy’s modesty.

16 months’ jail for secondary school teacher who molested love-struck student
Besotted with her Physics teacher, the 15-year-old girl began exchanging WhatsApp messages with the 32-year-old. Their conversations grew more explicit until he started physically taking advantage of her.

Pretending to help "cure" her of black magic, an Islamic religious teacher molested his student in a mosque.
The 73-year-old man, who was accredited under the Asatizah Recognition Scheme administered by the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (Muis) at the time, was yesterday sentenced to 16 months' jail and was struck off the scheme.

A primary school teacher unzipped his pupil's shorts to look at the underwear he had bought him, and on a separate occasion asked the boy to unzip his trousers, exposing his underwear to the pupil, a court heard yesterday.

A 55-year-old man who used to serve as vice-principal in a primary school located in the north-eastern part of Singapore was hauled to court after allegedly committing a series of indecent acts.
According to The Straits Times, the man was accused of stroking the private parts of a boy, then 14, in the school gym.
Court documents revealed that the boy then went to the man's flat in Woodlands twice in 2004, where the former vice-principal allegedly performed similar indecent acts.

Rope-skipping coach sexually abuses teenage student for years, sentenced to 25 years' jail
Roger Yue Jr, a rope-skipping coach convicted of committing sexual offences against a student, was sentenced to 25 years in jail on Monday (March 19) - after the judge made the uncommon move of imposing a sentence longer than the one recommended by the prosecution.
Describing the 60-year-old's crimes as heinous, Justice Aedit Abdullah said that "while the court should not impose a crushing sentence nor one that operates as an effective life sentence", he did not regard this as an absolute rule.
He also said that the sentence must be measured against the criminal conduct of the case in question.

A student's academic future is determined at age 10 through a streaming system, which pushes over-achievers into a fast-track schooling. At age 12 they take a national test to get into top schools.
"This over emphasis on results does not directly contribute to falling standards of probity in schools. Rather, what it did was to reduce the importance placed on values, character and integrity," said Eugene Tan, an assistant professor of law at the Singapore Management University. "In a sense we took our eyes off the ball when we shouldn't have. I think the matter is a lot more complex with multi-causal factors, including a general societal decline in moral standards," he said.

Are we Students, or are we Lovers?
In a student’s journey from the formative to the educated, teachers are the beacons of light illuminating the path before us. Playing such an important role, the teacher-student relationship is inevitably close, and in some situations, almost intimate. The question then arises: when does such a relationship cross the threshold from professional to personal? Is a casual invitation to the tutor’s house, or perhaps a cup of coffee at a nearby café, an illicit affair?
Recent headlines have revealed such a complication, with the relationship between student Darinne Ko and professor Tey Tsun Hang branded as ‘sex for grades’ by the media. Conversely, both parties have alleged that their relationship was born out of mutual attraction, with the gifts given out of affection, not bribery, and the grades awarded out of academic excellence, not partiality. In every teaching contract, there is invariably a clause stating that a teacher must maintain professional boundaries in his or her interactions with students. In NUS, for example, the Code of Conduct mandates staff members to ensure that their private activities are not in conflict with professional obligations. The university enforces this by demanding that their staff declare any personal relationships that result in a conflict of interests, as well as any gifts received from students that are worth more than a hundred dollars.
However, while boundaries of professionalism are demarcated, such clauses are often vague and fail to explicitly and specifically detail the limits of such a relationship. Yet it is admittedly difficult to determine the exact degree of familiarity that begins to contravene a professional relationship, given the infinitely complex nature of interpersonal relationships.

Teacher-student sex: A Sin and a Confession
The state of sexual morality in Singapore is in rapid decline. Today's edition of the Straits Times runs a story "Teacher pleads guilty to sex with pupil, 13" (5 March 2013), where a married teacher, who is mother of three children, had a three-month long relationship with a Primary 6 pupil, culminating in sexual encounters in a park, at her home and at the staircase of an HDB block. On 19 July 2012, when she was leaving to collect fast food for the boy, the vice-principal told her to go to the principal's office. When the principal asked if there was anything going on between her and the victim, she denied it. She was then asked to write a report. Feeling guilty and suffering a sleepless night, she did not want to tell her husband the full story. She then went to church the next day and confessed to her pastor, and also to her principal, before making a police report at Woodlands Neighbourhoood Police Centre.
She pleaded guilty to two charges of having sex with the boy, then 13, in a park and at her home between May and July 2011. Four other charges, including committing an obscene act with a child and performing oral sex on the victim, will be taken into consideration when she is sentenced. District Judge Kamala Ponnampalam adjourned the case to next Thursday for her lawyer Ravinderpal Singh to mitigate.

Sexual predators targeting minors – disconcerting number of cases
The State Court on Thursday dealt with three separate cases of sexual offences committed by men against minors. They are the latest in what seem to be a frequent occurrence in Singapore, going by news reports, of such cases involving minors. (See definition of “minor” here.)
In the first case on Thursday, 48-year old odd-job worker, Lee Kia Kit, was sentenced to seven years’ preventive detention and was also given one stroke of the cane for outraging the modesty of two girls, aged 13 and 15, when they were on their way to school in March.
The Deputy Public Prosecutor told the court that Lee had also had three previous convictions for sexual offences since 2011. The DPP thus argued that imprisonment had “no rehabilitative or deterrent effect” on Lee whose previous offences, the court was told, were committed against victims aged between nine and 45.

Singapore's Ministry of Education fails to prevent teacher misconduct
In the latest case of teacher misconduct, a relief physical education teacher in Singapore has been fired for inappropriate behaviour
The former National Junior College (NJC) teacher was found guilty of sending inappropriate messages to female students from April to June this year, including asking one to meet him in his hostel room. He is currently a student at Nanyang Technological University.
One of the victims had complained to NJC’s vice principal. “Our vice principal was alerted by the student’s parent about the inappropriate message sent in one encounter,” NJC’s spokesperson said. “An immediate investigation was carried out. The relief teacher had admitted and apologised for his inappropriate actions. The relief teacher is no longer with the school.” This puts the total number of reported cases to four – just over a span of three weeks.
In July, The Educator reported three cases of teacher misconduct in Singapore. One teacher was jailed for having an inappropriate relationship with his 15-year-old student. Another was found guilty of molesting his 13-year-old pupil. The third case involved a shocking drug scandal: a secondary teacher had asked her student to buy methamphetamine for her. The Ministry of Education (MOE) dismissed her from service during the investigation in 2017. Both teacher and student were charged separately.

A school did conduct a uniform check, and a teacher did proceed to check the colour of bra straps during the inspection. As it is, this is how it all went down.
According to Chinese daily Shin Min Daily News, a female teacher, believed to be the Secondary 4-year head, had unbuttoned students’ uniforms to verify the colour of their bra straps during the attire check. Apparently, Nanyang Girls’ High students are permitted to wear only white or beige undergarments.
Having supposedly done the attire check on behalf of the male form teacher, the teacher allegedly undid the collar buttons of students’ attires and pulled out their bra straps.
Pre-school teacher who humiliated 5-year-old boy suspended
A pre-school teacher who humiliated a 5-year-old boy for spotting long hair has been temporarily suspended by the school. The boy’s father had written a lengthy email post on Saturday (9 Jul) recounting how the teacher made his son stand in front of the class for sporting long hair, and put a “girl hair clip” on him, “much to the amusement of all the other kids”. The teacher further threatened to repeat the action the next school day if the boy did not cut his hair by then.

He pleaded guilty to three molestation charges involving three boys. Six similar charges involving four other teenagers will be considered during sentencing.

A private tutor repeatedly molested his 15-year-old student after classes ended, and the ordeal has led the girl to resort to self-harm.
According to the teenager's victim impact statement, the court heard that she had also suffered a loss of self-esteem and felt scared whenever she heard the word "tuition".
The tutor, a 48-year-old Indonesian man, was sentenced on Tuesday (July 9) to two years and a month's jail with six strokes of the cane after pleading guilty last month to three counts of molestation.

A male teacher was charged in court on Tuesday (June 23) over allegations that he had recorded 168 upskirt videos at the secondary school where he taught.
The man is accused of committing the offences between April 2015 and July 2018.

A married secondary school teacher, who was aware that one of his students was infatuated with him, showered the 14-year-old girl with gifts, such as a watch and an iPhone, before performing sexual acts on her.
A district court heard that the man even lied to the minor, claiming that he reciprocated her feelings even though he felt no romantic attachment to her.

A music teacher who molested an 18-year-old student while teaching her how to play the cello was sentenced to 21 months in jail and one stroke of the cane on Wednesday (May 8).
The 33-year-old Filipino, who cannot be named due to a gag order to protect the victim's identity, had been found guilty of four counts of molestation last month by District Judge Chay Yuen Fatt. It followed a five-day trial, during which the court heard that the girl was left so traumatised by the incidents that she hid under a desk and cut her wrists with a pair of scissors.
The teacher first molested her on June 25, 2016, after pointing out that the way she placed her cello against her body was incorrect.

Teachers in trouble - At least five court cases involving misconduct by teachers have been reported this year:
- June 25 - A secondary school teacher who used two counterfeit $100 notes to pay for massage services at Orchard Towers was jailed three years after losing his appeal. In July 2015, Daniel Wong Mun Meng, 44 photocopied a $100 note. He paid Ms Nguyen Nhu Trang with the fake notes for her “services”.
- July 13 - A physics teacher was jailed for a year and four months after he got intimate with a 15-year-old student. In September 2016, the man was hugging and kissing the girl , before a police officer spotted them at East Coast Park and informed the girl’s parents. They reported the incident.
- July 16 - A district court heard that a male teacher, now 38, squeezed the right side of a 13-year-old boy’s chest and told him he resembled a Japanese pornographic comic character in February 2016. The man also touched the boy’s groin and buttock. The teacher, out on bail, will be back in court on Aug 14.

A secondary school art teacher who engaged in sex talk with a student and claimed trial to molestation charges was found guilty on Monday (July 16).
District Judge John Ng convicted the 38-year-old of three charges of outrage of modesty following a ten-day trial. The judge said he was convinced of the accused’s guilt, based on the “totality of the evidence”.
The teacher, who has been suspended from duty since February 2016, will be back in court on Aug 14, when he is expected to be sentenced. He is out on bail of S$15,000. He taught at a co-ed school in western Singapore and cannot be named to protect his victim’s identity.
The victim, who was 13 and in Secondary Two at the time, was molested on Feb 17, 2016 in the school’s art room.

Questioned by his school principal the day after he allegedly molested a Secondary Two student last February, the art teacher apparently admitted he had touched the boy’s thighs.
Taking the stand on the first day of the molestation trial, the school principal said the 37-year-old accused – who cannot be named to protect the identity of the boy – “appeared to be shocked and remorseful” when asked to explain what had happened. He “knew that he had gone overboard… but wanted to (apologise) to the student (and his) parents”, the principal testified.

Benjamin James Henry, a 35-year-old Briton, apparently retorted by saying, “Get real, I am gay!”, when his accuser confronted him right after the alleged incident at about midnight on June 17, 2017.
The accuser, a woman in her 50s who works in the healthcare sector, testified at the opening of the trial on Thursday (May 2) that she was leaving the party with her British husband when she felt a hand running down her back to her buttock.

A mother had to choke back tears in court on Monday (Feb 12), when she recounted the moment when her son told her his male teacher behaved inappropriately towards him while they were in school.
On Feb 17 in 2016, the art teacher, then 36, and the boy, who was in 13 and in Secondary 2, were the only ones left in the school’s art room. The teacher then allegedly jabbed the boy’s underarm, squeezed the boy’s chest, and put his hands into the boy’s shorts to touch his buttocks and groin. “My heart ached,” the mother of two said on the witness stand, her voice shaking. “It pained me to know that my son had to go through such an unpleasant experience.”
The teacher, who cannot be named to protect the minor’s identity and who has been ordered to stop his teaching duties, faces three charges of outraging the boy’s modesty.

Teachers are our children’s mentors, advisors and guardians. We entrust them with our kids while we are not there to watch them learn, play and grow. This sanctity of trust is, almost always, upheld to the maximum by our children’s teachers. It’s safe to say that they deserve our trust.
But recently, news reports highlighted one rare case in Singapore where a teacher breached this trust.
According to The New Paper, this 30-year-old teacher started courting one of his students when she was just 13, and was reportedly with the underage student for the next five years, having sex with her in rented cars, hotel rooms and even in her own home. The sexual acts were allegedly filmed by the teacher without the girl’s knowledge or consent.

16 months’ jail for secondary school teacher who molested love-struck student
Besotted with her Physics teacher, the 15-year-old girl began exchanging WhatsApp messages with the 32-year-old. Their conversations grew more explicit until he started physically taking advantage of her.
For his crimes, the teacher, who taught at a secondary school in the eastern side of Singapore, was sentenced to 16 months behind bars on Friday (July 13).
The now 34-year-old pleaded guilty to three charges of committing indecent acts with a child or young person, with three other charges taken into consideration for sentencing. He cannot be named to protect his victim's identity. It was not stated in court if he is married.

She was just 13 years old but that didn't stop her 30-year-old school teacher from courting and having sex with her.
They went on to have numerous sexual encounters in rented cars, hotel rooms and her home over the next five years before breaking up. Unknown to her, he was secretly filming some of these trysts.
He also rented a room from her mother at her home, claiming that he needed a place to stay as he was undergoing divorce proceedings. After he moved in, he secretly filmed the girl and her mother while they were showering.

Female teacher asked underage male student to perform sex acts, filmed them in bed at Geylang hotel
A secondary school teacher, who became romantically involved with her 15-year-old student, told the minor to perform sexual acts on her. On one occasion, she recorded a video of them in bed in a Geylang hotel room. That was three years ago.
Now 29, she was sentenced on Monday (June 10) by District Judge Christopher Tan to two years and nine months' in jail.
The woman, who taught in a school in the northwestern part of Singapore, pleaded guilty to two counts each of offences under the Children and Young Persons Act as well as sexual penetration acts involving a minor.

Former Muis teacher used 'black magic' ruse to molest student in mosque
Pretending to help "cure" her of black magic, an Islamic religious teacher molested his student in a mosque.
The 73-year-old man, who was accredited under the Asatizah Recognition Scheme administered by the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (Muis) at the time, was yesterday sentenced to 16 months' jail and was struck off the scheme.
The man, who pleaded guilty last month to a molestation charge, cannot be named to protect the identity of the 36-year-old victim.

Ex-teacher jailed for indecent acts with male pupil who was too scared to tell anyone
A primary school teacher unzipped his pupil's shorts to look at the underwear he had bought him, and on a separate occasion asked the boy to unzip his trousers, exposing his underwear to the pupil, a court heard yesterday.
Colin Ting Fook Mun, 41, who quit teaching 1-1/2 years ago, pleaded guilty to three of eight charges of committing an indecent act with a child, and was jailed for 12 months.
The acts occurred at the primary school between March and September 2014 and in January last year.

A relief physical education teacher at National Junior College (NJC) has been terminated for inappropriate behaviour.
The coach, a student at Nanyang Technological University, admitted to sending inappropriate messages to female students from April to June, including asking one to meet him in his hostel room.
Several messages sent to the 17-year-old girl on social media platform Instagram were shared with The New Paper. In the messages, he asked her to "go into my heart" and meet him in his "comfortable room" to play some games.

A former secondary school teacher appeared in court on Thursday (Feb 21) after he allegedly had multiple sexual encounters with his underage female student in 2015.

Primary school vice-principal accused of engaging in oral sex with 14-year-old boy and stroking his private parts
A 55-year-old man who used to serve as vice-principal in a primary school located in the north-eastern part of Singapore was hauled to court after allegedly committing a series of indecent acts.
According to The Straits Times, the man was accused of stroking the private parts of a boy, then 14, in the school gym.
Court documents revealed that the boy then went to the man's flat in Woodlands twice in 2004, where the former vice-principal allegedly performed similar indecent acts.

Rope-skipping coach sexually abuses teenage student for years, sentenced to 25 years' jail
Roger Yue Jr, a rope-skipping coach convicted of committing sexual offences against a student, was sentenced to 25 years in jail on Monday (March 19) - after the judge made the uncommon move of imposing a sentence longer than the one recommended by the prosecution.
Describing the 60-year-old's crimes as heinous, Justice Aedit Abdullah said that "while the court should not impose a crushing sentence nor one that operates as an effective life sentence", he did not regard this as an absolute rule.
He also said that the sentence must be measured against the criminal conduct of the case in question.

Recent spate of inappropriate behaviour by teachers leads MOE to step up vigilance
The Ministry of Education has announced that it will be working more closely with local schools to step up vigilance and ensure that students are better protected from errant teachers.
This, after a recent spate of inappropriate behaviour by local teachers brought disrepute to the profession. Multiple cases involving teacher misconduct went to court so far this year, with offences ranging from sending students inappropriate messages, committing indecent acts on students and even getting pupils to buy drugs for teachers.
- 25 JUNE – A secondary school teacher was jailed three weeks after he pleaded guilty to printing two counterfeit Singapore $100 dollar notes and using them to pay for the massage services of a Vietnamese woman, whom he testified he had sex with. The teacher claimed that he had photocopied and printed the $100 dollar notes at home, to use it as a teaching tool during his maths class at Bukit Batok Secondary School.
- 13 JULY – A physics teacher was jailed for a year and four months after he shared intimate relations with a 15-year-old student. The teacher was caught by a police officer hugging and kissing the teenager at East Coast Park.
- 16 JULY – A male teacher squeezed a 13-year-old child’s chest and touched the boy’s groin and buttock as he told him that he resembled a Japanese pornographic comic character. The teacher is presently out on bail and will return to court on 14 August.
- 25 JULY – A district court heard that a teacher at Meridian Secondary School told her student about her methamphetamine consumption, prompting the student to offer his help to find her a cheaper drug supplier. The teacher gave her student $200 to buy the drugs but the boy was caught during a CNB spot check. While the student was sentenced to probation of two years and three months, MOE sacked the teacher.

A 50-year-old teacher was charged in court on Thursday with three counts of molesting a 16-year-old student in a school in Singapore, according to reports.
The male teacher is alleged to have rubbed the back of the female student on the left shoulder and on the waist area from outside her school uniform top on the premises of the school on July 26 of this year.

At least 10 such cases have reached the courts this year.
In a country known for its orderliness and strict laws where even jay-walking and public spitting are punishable offenses, the scandals are raising questions about whether the government — in its hugely successful efforts to control political dissidence and crime — has ignored declining moral and social standards. More surprising is that such egregious cases have been recorded in Singapore's highly regarded educational system, where both teachers and students are conditioned from first grade to be disciplined, rule-fearing and committed to academic excellence. A student's academic future is determined at age 10 through a streaming system, which pushes over-achievers into a fast-track schooling. At age 12 they take a national test to get into top schools.
"This over emphasis on results does not directly contribute to falling standards of probity in schools. Rather, what it did was to reduce the importance placed on values, character and integrity," said Eugene Tan, an assistant professor of law at the Singapore Management University. "In a sense we took our eyes off the ball when we shouldn't have. I think the matter is a lot more complex with multi-causal factors, including a general societal decline in moral standards," he said.

Are we Students, or are we Lovers?
In a student’s journey from the formative to the educated, teachers are the beacons of light illuminating the path before us. Playing such an important role, the teacher-student relationship is inevitably close, and in some situations, almost intimate. The question then arises: when does such a relationship cross the threshold from professional to personal? Is a casual invitation to the tutor’s house, or perhaps a cup of coffee at a nearby café, an illicit affair?
Recent headlines have revealed such a complication, with the relationship between student Darinne Ko and professor Tey Tsun Hang branded as ‘sex for grades’ by the media. Conversely, both parties have alleged that their relationship was born out of mutual attraction, with the gifts given out of affection, not bribery, and the grades awarded out of academic excellence, not partiality. In every teaching contract, there is invariably a clause stating that a teacher must maintain professional boundaries in his or her interactions with students. In NUS, for example, the Code of Conduct mandates staff members to ensure that their private activities are not in conflict with professional obligations. The university enforces this by demanding that their staff declare any personal relationships that result in a conflict of interests, as well as any gifts received from students that are worth more than a hundred dollars.
However, while boundaries of professionalism are demarcated, such clauses are often vague and fail to explicitly and specifically detail the limits of such a relationship. Yet it is admittedly difficult to determine the exact degree of familiarity that begins to contravene a professional relationship, given the infinitely complex nature of interpersonal relationships.

Teacher-student sex: A Sin and a Confession
The state of sexual morality in Singapore is in rapid decline. Today's edition of the Straits Times runs a story "Teacher pleads guilty to sex with pupil, 13" (5 March 2013), where a married teacher, who is mother of three children, had a three-month long relationship with a Primary 6 pupil, culminating in sexual encounters in a park, at her home and at the staircase of an HDB block. On 19 July 2012, when she was leaving to collect fast food for the boy, the vice-principal told her to go to the principal's office. When the principal asked if there was anything going on between her and the victim, she denied it. She was then asked to write a report. Feeling guilty and suffering a sleepless night, she did not want to tell her husband the full story. She then went to church the next day and confessed to her pastor, and also to her principal, before making a police report at Woodlands Neighbourhoood Police Centre.
She pleaded guilty to two charges of having sex with the boy, then 13, in a park and at her home between May and July 2011. Four other charges, including committing an obscene act with a child and performing oral sex on the victim, will be taken into consideration when she is sentenced. District Judge Kamala Ponnampalam adjourned the case to next Thursday for her lawyer Ravinderpal Singh to mitigate.
The Sin:
- This case is morally deplorable on so many levels, and only the surface of which is only scraped by the law. Being married, a mother of three, a teacher, and the fact that the boy was merely 13 at the time, acts such as these simultaneously violate a wide plethora of duties, which the rights-centric discourse of our day is barely able to grasp:
- One's own bodily integrity. Contrary to the assertions of John Stuart Mill, over himself, his own body and mind, the individual is not sovereign. Any form of sexual conduct outside marriage is a defilement of one's bodily integrity, misdirecting one's sexual passions in acts of lust.
- To one's husband. The marriage vow is sacred, and represents a lifelong duty of mutual faithfulness, love and respect. The marital vow is a promise made before God, family, relatives and friends, and pleads for their sanction. Most importantly, it is made to one's spouse. By committing an act of adultery, that duty is violated and the marriage bed defiled. One extremely shocking aspect of this case is how this teacher had sex with her student in her own home.
- To one's children. It is a terrible thing for children to suffer that the womb that bore them and the breast that fed them should be have the seed of another sown and to be fondled by one who is not their father. The energy and passion that had been directed in lust should have been better spent nurturing and caring for the children.
- One's duty as a teacher. A teacher is a moral exemplar to her students, and should not only educate children in their school subjects, but to model life to them. Sex education of this sort is definitely not the kind of education parents send their children to school for.
- To the boy. To the boy, these sexual acts are a horrific corruption of his innocence. Even though the Child Guidance Clinic found that he was embarassed by what had happened but showed no evidence of any adverse psychological effects, the teacher's acts have robbed him of his virginity and sexualised the child at such a young age when he should have been left to grow and develop properly.
- What would a virtuous person do? Of course, a virtuous person in the shoes of this particular teacher would not have done what she did, because it is inconsistent with the nature of virtue to do so. However, in a world where humans are "only human", we may have to live with second-best.
- The virtuous thing to do after one has erred is not to conceal one's error. In this, the teacher has done one right thing in confessing to her pastor, the principal, and then submitting herself to the authorities. She has done a further right thing in pleading guilty to the offences.

Sexual predators targeting minors – disconcerting number of cases
The State Court on Thursday dealt with three separate cases of sexual offences committed by men against minors. They are the latest in what seem to be a frequent occurrence in Singapore, going by news reports, of such cases involving minors. (See definition of “minor” here.)
In the first case on Thursday, 48-year old odd-job worker, Lee Kia Kit, was sentenced to seven years’ preventive detention and was also given one stroke of the cane for outraging the modesty of two girls, aged 13 and 15, when they were on their way to school in March.
The Deputy Public Prosecutor told the court that Lee had also had three previous convictions for sexual offences since 2011. The DPP thus argued that imprisonment had “no rehabilitative or deterrent effect” on Lee whose previous offences, the court was told, were committed against victims aged between nine and 45.

Singapore's Ministry of Education fails to prevent teacher misconduct
The former National Junior College (NJC) teacher was found guilty of sending inappropriate messages to female students from April to June this year, including asking one to meet him in his hostel room. He is currently a student at Nanyang Technological University.
One of the victims had complained to NJC’s vice principal. “Our vice principal was alerted by the student’s parent about the inappropriate message sent in one encounter,” NJC’s spokesperson said. “An immediate investigation was carried out. The relief teacher had admitted and apologised for his inappropriate actions. The relief teacher is no longer with the school.” This puts the total number of reported cases to four – just over a span of three weeks.
In July, The Educator reported three cases of teacher misconduct in Singapore. One teacher was jailed for having an inappropriate relationship with his 15-year-old student. Another was found guilty of molesting his 13-year-old pupil. The third case involved a shocking drug scandal: a secondary teacher had asked her student to buy methamphetamine for her. The Ministry of Education (MOE) dismissed her from service during the investigation in 2017. Both teacher and student were charged separately.

NYGH teacher checked students' bra
CAUSED STUDENTS TO FEEL UNCOMFORTABLE; SCHOOL HAS APOLOGISED
A school did conduct a uniform check, and a teacher did proceed to check the colour of bra straps during the inspection. As it is, this is how it all went down.
According to Chinese daily Shin Min Daily News, a female teacher, believed to be the Secondary 4-year head, had unbuttoned students’ uniforms to verify the colour of their bra straps during the attire check. Apparently, Nanyang Girls’ High students are permitted to wear only white or beige undergarments.
Having supposedly done the attire check on behalf of the male form teacher, the teacher allegedly undid the collar buttons of students’ attires and pulled out their bra straps.
Pre-school teacher who humiliated 5-year-old boy suspended
A pre-school teacher who humiliated a 5-year-old boy for spotting long hair has been temporarily suspended by the school. The boy’s father had written a lengthy email post on Saturday (9 Jul) recounting how the teacher made his son stand in front of the class for sporting long hair, and put a “girl hair clip” on him, “much to the amusement of all the other kids”. The teacher further threatened to repeat the action the next school day if the boy did not cut his hair by then.
In his Facebook post which has since gone viral with over 2000 shares, the boy’s father Eric Cheong said that his son told him that he felt like dying. The father, painted the teacher who he identified as Ms Theresa, as ‘monster’ who the pre-schoolers were terribly afraid of. Eric said:
“What has happened to my son today is just one of the many, I would have to say improper conducts, for an early childhood teacher to be exhibiting. A few other parents also feedback Ms Theresa would use marker or pen that she is holding to poke on our children’s foreheads when they answered wrongly to her questions. She will use a water spray and spray into the kid’s mouth if they ever seen yawning in her class. She had in a few situations, tied up the kid’s legs together if they swing their legs in class. Just last week, my boy’s classmate vomited in class and she had the decency to make the kid clean up the vomit by herself, even though she was unwell.”read more
Primary school teacher investigated for abusive punishment of students
Several parents, unhappy with how a mathematics and science teacher was disciplining students in Gongshang Primary School, have lodged complaints with the school & the Ministry of Education (MOE).
According to the parents, the female teacher from the school in Tampines -- who has been relieved of her teaching duties & cannot be named as investigations into the case are still ongoing -- had resorted to abusive punishment of her students in the classes she taught.
The punishments ranged from the students being called names, having to kneel beside the teacher’s table, and getting objects thrown at them.
Teacher's Apology Did Not Placate The Boy
Posted on Wednesday morning, the video, taken in secret by a third party, shows a private conversation between “Justin” and his teacher, who tells the boy to “remember your agreement with me” and asks him to go back to his seat. “Justin” goes back to his seat for a while before going to another student’s table. The teacher shouts his name and the boy went back to his seat.
That was when the boy tells his teacher not to shout at him saying: “Am I deaf? Just answer my question…you should not shout, I’m not deaf, okay...Who ask you to shout? I’m deaf, ah?”.
“Justin” demands that the teacher says sorry to him. The teacher is heard apologising to the student for shouting and saying that “Justin” has to sit down.
Protecting Our Minors from Underage Sex Crimes
The 64-year-old man, who cannot be named to protect his grandson’s identity, had also morally corrupted his grandson by showing him pornography as a precursor to the sexual penetration and molest on two occasions, said the prosecution as part of its submissions for sentencing.
Deputy Public Prosecutors Winston Man and N K Anitha asked the High Court for a jail term of at least 12 years.
The prosecution also argued for the need to deter the man, who “demonstrated a degree of persistence in sexually abusing his grandson” in the family home.
