Spate of Assault & Altercation

Update 29 Sep 2023: Mother fined after altercation with another woman over her 8-year-old son using ladies' toilet

A tiff between two women that began because one of them asked her eight-year-old son to use the women's toilet ended in a physical altercation. The mother of the boy also drove against traffic, accelerating towards the other woman. Wang Jing, 39, was fined S$3,000 by a court on Friday (Sep 29) for her conduct.

She pleaded guilty to one count each of criminal force and a rash act endangering personal safety, with a third charge taken into consideration. The court heard that Wang took her son to Block 750A Chai Chee Lane, a commercial office building, for basketball lessons on Jul 5 last year. Around 3pm, Wang told her son to go to the toilet and he entered the women's toilet while Wang waited outside.

At the time, 33-year-old Tan Siok Khim Irish and her colleague Ms Tay Lay Leng were inside the women's toilet. The two women and Wang's son subsequently left the toilet and headed to the lift. While on the way, Ms Tay told Tan that Wang's son was too old to be using the women's toilet. She said he should have used the men's toilet at the other end.

Buangkok Sword-Wielding Man Promised Not To Reoffend After Being Jailed Twice, Behaviour Stresses Wife

The recent incident involving a sword-wielding man in Buangkok has left many Singaporeans stunned and bewildered. Though his actions brought harm to others, there’s always the human side of such violence.

According to Shin Min Daily, the couple has been married for 13 years and has 4 daughters — the youngest was only 20 months old. Given how young their kids were, the man’s wife, Yati – name transliterated from Chinese – shared that she’s unable to work and said her husband was the sole breadwinner.

As an Indonesian national, Yati holds a Long-Term Pass, which expires next year. With the latest episode, the 36-year-old said she might not tolerate this any longer and hinted at a divorce. However, Yati worries that she might have to leave Singapore after the divorce, and she can’t see her children anymore.

The number of knife-related crimes involving murder, robbery, rioting and serious hurt has remained "relatively constant" over the past five years, averaging about 150 cases annually, said Minister of State for Home Affairs Desmond Tan on Monday (Apr 4).

About 36 per cent of these crimes occurred in residential areas, and 3 per cent took place in educational institutions' premises. The remaining cases occurred in other public and commercial places, said Mr Tan in Parliament. He was responding to parliamentary questions in light of recent sword and knife-related crimes.

In March, a 64-year-old man armed with a knife died after he was shot in the chest by the police. He had refused to drop his weapon despite multiple warnings and was tasered three times. Last month, a 37-year-old man was charged after he was seen wielding a sword at Buangkok Crescent, swinging it at a pedestrian and hitting passing cars. In the same month, a 27-year-old man was charged with throwing a "watermelon knife" at a police officer in Bukit Batok.

The most widely reported incident that day involved a 37-year-old man who was caught on video swinging a sword near Buangkok Square mall and stopping oncoming traffic. However, he continued to advance towards the officers," it added. “As there was imminent threat to the safety of the officers, one of the officers fired a shot from his pistol at the man, and the man fell to the ground."

There Was Another Blade Incident on 26 March at Ghim Moh But This Time, It Involves Molestation

Nope, Singapore’s very own Blade Sagas aren’t over yet. Yalah, I know got four cases already. I’m telling you that there’s one more. And before you go, “Again?!”, here’s all you need to know about the most recent blade incident that took place on 26 March.

And in case you haven’t caught up with all the past blade incidents, here’s a quick summary of everything you need to know (so that you don’t seem like a complete suaku when your friends talk about it in your ten-people social gathering).

According to Shin Min Daily News, a man was seen to be arrested at the slip road leading to Ghim Moh link on the evening of 26 March. Based on photographs, it took at least ten police officers to pin the man, who is 47 years old, down before arresting him. The man apparently had a hammer with him when he was arrested.

Another Man Arrested for Wielding a Chopper on Wednesday, The 4th Blade Incident This Week

Uh, yes, there’s another blade case in Singapore again. And the last time I checked, Mediacorp wasn’t recruiting anyone for a new sword-fighting TV programme.

Before you scramble to see if any of the cases are linked with each other (I know, we’re all kaypoh about this to a certain extent), here are all the details you need to know about the most recent case in Singapore involving a blade. On Wednesday (16 March), a 77-year-old man was arrested by the police for criminal intimidation and possession of an offensive weapon. The violent incident occurred at 29 Bendemeer Road, where two men had allegedly gotten into a fight before fleeing the scene. Apparently, one of them had a chopper in his hand.

Over the past week, there have been three other incidents relating to blades. All three incidents occurred on Monday (14 March):
  • A 37-year-old man was arrested and charged on Wednesday (16 March) with one count of voluntarily causing hurt with a samurai sword after he attacked a number of cars and pedestrians near Buangkok Square mall on Monday afternoon.
  • Over at Strathmore Avenue near Queenstown, a 33-year-old man was arrested after slashing two people with a razor blade. He was charged with two counts of voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means in court on Wednesday (16 March).
  • On Monday night after 9 pm, another 27-year-old man was arrested at Bukit Batok after he threw a knife at a police officer’s right cheek.

All 3 Suspects Involved in Different Violent Blade Incidents Will be Remanded for Psychiatric Observation

If you’ve been following the news over the past few days, you might be wondering if you’ve been reading repeated reports regarding blade or sword incidents. No, no, you haven’t. Yup, they’re all different people who somehow all committed violent crimes using blades on the same day. And all with different types of blades.

With three incidents involving men with blades (and no, they weren’t filming different parts of a Singaporean adaptation of an Wuxia drama) that occurred two days ago (14 March), all three men appeared in court today (16 March). The verdict? All of them will be remanded for further psychiatric observation before they return to court for their hearings:
  • Buangkok Square Incident - One of the people in the vicinity, Mr Kumarapeli Arachchige Amila Chinthana, got slashed thrice on his left arm and shoulder as a result of the man’s behaviour. Another man also sustained abrasions on his left knee, but there are currently no charges against the perpetrator for that injury. The perpetrator, Fadhil Yusop, a 37-year-old Singaporean, was charged today (16 March) with one count of voluntarily causing hurt with a samurai sword. He appeared in court via video link, and his left arm was in a sling when he appeared on camera.
  • Queenstown Incident - Mohd S. Muhibullah Said Abdullah, a 33-year-old Singaporean, was charged with two charges of voluntarily causing hurt with a dangerous weapon. He had carried out his attacks using a razor blade, and the attacks occurred at Block 59 Strathmore Avenue in Queenstown. Muhibullah is accused of slashing two people, Mr John Ryan Buguistan Jimenez and Ms Pauline Goh Quek Choo, with the same razor blade. He slashed Mr Jimenez on the left side of his neck and Ms Goh on her left arm.
  • Bukit Batok Incident - Leonard Goh Yew Cheng, a 27-year-old Singaporean, was also charged in court today (16 March) for throwing a knife at a police officer. Goh is currently facing one charge of voluntarily causing hurt to deter a public servant from his duty, as well as two counts of possessing offensive weapons. Goh had apparently thrown a watermelon knife at 42-year-old Station Inspector Cheong Kah Guan’s face on Monday (14 March). The knife handle hit the officer’s face and resulted in bruising on Station Inspector Cheong’s face.
