Update 20 Dec 2020: Pipe leak sparks jokes about new water feature at Jewel Changi Airport

This is not the first time that water has been seen leaking at the mega retail building

A leaking pipe resulted in a large puddle of water forming in Basement 1 of Jewel Changi Airport on Friday (Dec 18). Videos circulating on social media and Whatsapp Messenger show water pouring out from the ceiling outside the Owndays eyewear shop. A staff member from the store next door can be seen sweeping water away from the entrance.

The video was shared on various Facebook groups and pages, including All Singapore Stuff, where it had more than 200 reactions and almost 200 shares.

Those who saw the video joked about the pipe leak mimicking Jewel Changi’s famous HSBC Rain Vortex, the world’s tallest indoor waterfall. Others pointed out that this was not the first time water was seen leaking at the airport’s mega retail building. Shortly after Jewel Changi Airport’s opening in April last year, faulty sprinklers leaked water on several occasions.

Jewel Changi Airport basement flooded after water pipe leaks, businesses affected for 30 minutes

Businesses on the basement floor of Jewel Changi Airport ran into a bit of an inconvenience on Dec. 18. A water pipe in the ceiling leaked at around 11:15am.

A video of the scene posted to Facebook page All Singapore Stuff showed a shower of water raining down from the ceiling, with the floor outside Owndays and Jinjja Chicken stores appearing completely wet. A woman can be seen in the background mopping up the water as well.

This isn't the first time water leakages have occurred at Jewel. One incident caused by a sprinkler activation in April 2019 led to multiple floors being wet. The first water leakage incident caught on video occurred before the mall's opening on Apr. 17. The 2nd Jewel Changi Airport water leak caused by sprinkler.

Jewel Changi Airport is known for its indoor waterfall Rain Vortex but has some of the 'rain' spilled over to other parts of the building?

A clip circulating on Facebook showed water gushing out from the ceiling outside eyewear shop Owndays located at Basement 1, forming a big puddle on the floor. A female staff member from the store next door was also seen sweeping water away from its entrance.

Shortly after Jewel Changi Airport's opening last April, faulty sprinklers also caused "water leakages" there on several occasions.

Singapore to shut Changi’s Terminal 2 for 18 months due to COVID-19

Singapore will shut Terminal 2 of the Changi Airport as part of a cost-cutting move due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has seriously affected the country’s tourism industry.

All operations at the terminal, including retail, will be suspended for 18 months starting May, Transport Minister Khaw Boon Wan reportedly announced in Parliament today. He also hinted at more closures, noting that only one terminal has so far been enough to handle the traffic at the airport.

Airlines operating at the terminal will be transferred to Changi’s remaining three terminals next month. Singapore Airlines will operate from Terminal 3. “We will save on running costs – for the airport operator, retail tenants, airlines and ground handlers,” The Straits Times quoted him as saying.

Two six-year old boys were playing near a free-standing mirror inside a boutique at Jewel Changi Airport when one of them stepped out from behind it.

The mirror, almost 2m tall and weighing over 100kg, fell on one of the boys' baby sister, causing her death on Aug 23 last year.

One-year-old Lai Jiaxin, a Chinese national, was rushed to Changi General Hospital where she was pronounced dead at 2.35pm that day.

A toddler who died after being crushed by a mirror at a shop in Jewel Changi Airport was standing in front of it when her brother and a family friend squeezed out from behind the mirror, causing it to fall.

This was revealed on the first day of the coroner's inquiry into the death of Chinese national Lai Jiaxin, who was a year old at the time of the incident on Aug 23, 2019.

The court heard that she had come to Singapore with her six-year-old brother, her mother Mrs Lai, her grandmother and some family friends for a holiday earlier that week on Aug 19.

An eight-year-old boy sustained a cut above his right eye while playing at the Mirror Maze attraction in Jewel Changi Airport's Canopy Park on Wednesday last week.

According to Chinese-language newspaper Shin Min Daily News, the boy's family are from Malaysia and had landed in Singapore after their holiday in Thailand. They wanted to have dinner before going back to Johor Baru.

His mother, Ms Wen Meiqing, 40, told Shin Min that she and her husband had taken their two sons, aged 10 and eight, to Canopy Park. But she soon lost sight of her younger child as he was excited and was running around in the maze.

An 18-month-old toddler died in hospital on Friday (Aug 23) after a standing mirror fell on her inside fashion store Urban Revivo at Jewel Changi Airport.

A spokesman for Jewel Changi Airport said that the accident had occurred because a full-length mirror in the store had fallen and injured the child.

Staff on-site administered first aid to the child while waiting for the paramedics to arrive.

The family of the 18-month-old girl who died after a mirror fell on top of her at a fashion shop in Jewel Changi Airport have flown home to China, but have engaged a lawyer to handle the case here, The Straits Times understands.

The family, who were on holiday from China, returned home on Monday (Aug 26) afternoon, a day after the girl was cremated.

The tragedy last Friday took place at the two-storey Urban Revivo store about three hours before the girl and her family were originally due to fly back to China.

Injuries at Jewel attractions: Onus is on users to stay safe

This past week, Jewel Changi Airport’s Canopy Park made headlines for two accidents that left visitors injured. On Wednesday (June 19), a 14-year-old girl suffered a cut beneath her right eye at Mirror Maze, an attraction at the indoor park. This came five days after a woman tripped on the Sky Nets, another attraction at the park, leaving her with a deep cut on her hand. While some readers urged Jewel to step up safety measures and shut the attractions for investigations, others said that the onus was on users to stay safe:

To the management of Jewel, regardless of whose fault it is, the important and responsible thing to do is close the attractions with immediate effect, and conduct a thorough investigation into how the design of the Sky Nets and Mirror Maze allowed the incidents to happen. A good design should be dummy-proof, with safety checks done using a conservative approach, that is, assuming a careless customer and not a cautious one. At the same time, review all the other attractions as well. Do the right thing and protect your customers first, especially young and elderly people. Worry about defending your image later. Jewel Changi Airport urges vigilance after boy gets foot stuck in escalator, rushed to hospital

A child was rushed to hospital after his foot ended up stuck in an escalator at basement two of Jewel Changi Airport on Monday, June 24. The Singapore Civil Defence Force was called at 3:20pm, and officers on the scene used rescue tools and drilling to pry the boy free.

This is not the first safety incident at Jewel Changi Airport, with two previous occasions of visitors getting injured within one week of the Canopy Park’s opening.

Last week saw a 14-year old girl requiring nine stitches after injuring herself at the mirror maze attraction at the park, while earlier this month, a woman sustained a deep cut on her finger after falling on the sky nets. Previously, a five-year-old boy also got his slipper stuck at the edge of an escalator.

A child was taken to hospital after getting a foot stuck in an escalator at Jewel Changi Airport on Monday (June 24).

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it responded to a call for assistance at 78 Airport Boulevard at 3.20pm and that the boy's foot was released using rescue tools.

He was conveyed to KK Women's and Children's Hospital in an SCDF ambulance.

A boy was taken to hospital after getting his foot stuck in an escalator at Jewel Changi Airport on Monday (Jun 24).

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) confirmed that it responded to a call for assistance at 78 Airport Boulevard at 3.20pm.

The child was released by SCDF using rescue tools, it added.

Girl, 14, requires 9 stitches on face after playing at Jewel Changi Airport’s Canopy Park

A 14-year-old girl required nine stitches on her face after on Wednesday, June 19. The teenager’s aunt, Susan Goh, 45, wrote that her niece was playing with five other children at that time.

However, the teenager did not know how she got injured. According to Yahoo News, the doctor said the girl’s injury would likely leave a scar.

This was the second known injury within 10 days of the park’s opening.

The teenager’s aunt, Ms Susan Goh, 45, shared her experience on Facebook. Ms Goh noted that her niece got the cut while navigating through the Mirror Maze, an attraction at the Canopy Park located at the topmost level of Jewel Changi Airport.

According to Ms Goh, her niece was playing at the attraction on June 19 (Wednesday) with five other children. Her niece was unaware of her cut until one of her playmates pointed out that she was bleeding, reported The Straits Times.

The incident at the mirror maze attraction in the park came to light when the teenager’s aunt, Susan Goh, 45, posted before and after photos of the wound on Facebook on the same evening. In her post, the real estate consultant wrote that her niece was playing with five other children at the attraction when the incident occurred, but the teenager did not know how she sustained the injury.

There were 6 children playing in the premises. My niece didn't even know which area inside the Mirror Maze that she had the cut.
The attraction manager came to assist. The remedy procedure need improvement.
My niece had 9 stitches on her open wound at Raffles Hospital.
Reporter has contacted me and informed me Jewel's repy (Refer to pic attached). Thank you Mr. Reporter, none of us have received any concerning call from Jewel. Guess such incident are not new to them.
We are not accusing Jewel, we just want others to take precautions whilst bringing their loved ones there.

Neo claimed that she fell on the nets as her foot was stuck in the gap between the ropes. She landed on the ropes which supposedly cut her hand as well as causing slight abrasions and bruises on her limbs.

Woman injures her hand after tripping on Canopy Park walking net

A woman injured her hand tripping on the sky nets attraction at Canopy Park in Jewel Changi Airport on Friday. A Jewel spokesman confirmed the incident, saying that the woman had "tripped while walking and fell forward" around 5.05pm.

A ranger on duty immediately administered first aid, said the spokesman. Canopy Park opened to the public on June 10.

The spokesman said: "We regret the guest's unfortunate experience, and we urge all guests to stay aware of their personal safety while having fun at the attractions."

A five-year-old boy’s slipper got stuck in the edge of an escalator in Jewel Changi Airport at around 10pm on May 12, 2019.

According to Lianhe Wanbao, the incident occurred on a down-riding escalator headed for basement level one from the first floor of the gigantic mall. The boy was casually dressed in a yellow top and shorts, and had his slippers on. He was taking the escalator with his family.

The report said it was his right slipper that got caught in the escalator.

2nd Jewel Changi Airport water leak caused by sprinkler

On early Friday morning, April 26, sprinkler activation caused water leakage on multiple floors at Jewel Changi Airport. This is the second water leak in a month that has been reported at the mall.

A spokesperson for Jewel said: “There was a sprinkler activation in Jewel at about 1am this morning (26 April), which caused water leakage in various levels of Jewel.” “The issue was quickly attended to and resolved with minimal impact to operations.”
