Spate of child abuse: Pedophilia

Update 13 Dec 2024: Man found guilty of paying 16-year-old 'sugar baby' for sex

A man who found a 16-year-old "sugar baby" online was on Friday (Dec 13) convicted of paying the girl for sex following a trial. Mario Antonio Di Dier, a 42-year-old Singaporean, was found guilty on five counts of paying the victim for sex between Dec 2, 2021 and Apr 13, 2022.

The legal age of consent for sex in Singapore is 16. But it is an offence to have commercial sex with a minor under the age of 18. Di Dier and the girl met in November 2021 via the Sugarbook website. According to the website, the minimum age required to use Sugarbook is 18. The website bills itself as a dating platform that connects "sugar daddies" with "sugar babies" - a relationship that usually involves exchanging financial support for sexual acts or companionship.

The police were alerted to the case by the victim, who lodged a report in August 2022 saying that she had consensual sex with Di Dier and he paid her afterwards. At trial, Di Dier agreed that they had sex, but denied paying her. He claimed that he gave her money because she was his friend and in financial need. The prosecution's case was that before having sex, the victim told Di Dier she joined Sugarbook because she needed money, and told him her rates for different sexual acts. Di Dier agreed, and they started a sexual relationship on this basis.

Former SAF regular gets jail and caning for raping 13-year-old girl, cries in the dock

A former Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) regular was sentenced to 10 years' jail and 12 strokes on the cane on Wednesday (Sep 25) for raping a 13-year-old girl at a staircase landing when he was twice her age.

Muhammad Mohamed Iqbal, who is now 29 and is no longer in the army, cried in the dock during proceedings, dabbing at his eyes with tissue paper. He pleaded guilty to one count of rape by oral penetration, and one count of possessing child abuse material. There are broadly three kinds of rape under Section 375: Penile-vaginal, penile-anal and penile-oral. It applies with or without the victim's consent if the victim is below 14.

The penalties for all three types of rape are a maximum of 20 years and a fine or caning. Muhammad held the rank of Military Expert 1 (ME1) at the time of his arrest, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) told CNA on Thursday. He was suspended from all duties after being charged in 2023 and "ceased to be employed by the SAF" that year, said the spokesperson.

'Sugar daddy' paid 15-year-old girl for sex, filmed her and other victims secretly, gets jail

A man joined a website called Sugarbook where he could have "sugar babies", or sexual relationships in exchange for financial support, and met a 15-year-old girl there. He had sex with her regularly, offering to pay her S$1,800 (US$1,350) a month for her company, but secretly filmed the intimate acts without her permission.

When he was arrested on suspicion of having commercial sex with a minor, the police uncovered other intimate videos he took of two other victims aged 21 and 25. Benjamin Huang Junlong, a 39-year-old Singaporean, was sentenced to jail for two years and one month on Friday (Jan 5). He pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual penetration of a minor and two counts of voyeurism, with another eight charges taken into consideration.

The court heard that Huang joined Sugarbook in mid-2018, intending to have sexual relationships in exchange for financial support. In December 2020, he came across a profile on the website of the first victim, named A1 in court documents. Because the website required members to be above 18, A1 indicated that she was 19 on her profile.

140 cases of child sex abuse material offences investigated by police since 2020
Minister of State for Home Affairs Sun Xueling said that as crime evolves, so too must Singapore’s legal framework

Children are facing a greater risk of being sexually exploited because of new technologies, and it is challenging for the authorities to prosecute the predators.

And the best way for international law enforcement to tackle this is to work together, said US Ambassador to Singapore Jonathan Kaplan on Sept 16. He was speaking to about 180 officers and participants at the opening of the Child Forensic Interview Regional Workshop at the Police Cantonment Complex.

Fatal child abuse - The crime of standing by and why mothers let their children die

A five-year-old boy is scalded to death after months of abuse by his parents. An 11-year-old girl is assaulted by her stepfather until she succumbs to internal injuries. Another five-year-old girl is routinely punched by her martial arts-trained father, until she dies in the toilet.

These are not just horrific stories – they are cases from Singapore’s courts in recent years depicting disturbingly similar scenarios – one parent or step-parent abuses a child while the other allows it, or even joins in. Eventually, the child dies. In January 2020, as part of sweeping reforms to Singapore’s Penal Code, a new offence came into force: Section 304C – for causing or allowing the death of a child aged below 14, or a domestic worker or vulnerable person in the same household. In cases that have come before Singapore’s courts involving the deaths of children, the parent who allowed the death was overwhelmingly a woman. What is the family dynamic in these cases and what can women in similar situations do?

In a report released in 2018, a committee tasked with reviewing the Penal Code noticed a spike in prosecutions of fatal abuse of vulnerable victims, with at least five such cases in the courts between January 2016 and December 2017. This was a sharp rise from the seven cases of fatal abuse of vulnerable victims prosecuted from 2000 to 2011.

Couple jailed for abusing 11-year-old girl who died of head injuries

A couple who abused an 11-year-old girl who died of head injuries was sentenced to jail on Thursday (Feb 15), with the stepfather getting a heftier term as he had killed the girl with blows from an exercise bar. The court also lifted the gag orders on the identities of the two abusers, even though the pair argued against it citing the impact on their surviving children.

Roslinda Jamil, 30, was sentenced to seven years, eight months and three weeks' jail for multiple charges. These include allowing the death of a child, the first such prosecution here involving the charge. Mohamad Fazli Selamat, 29, was given 15 years and 11 months' jail and 12 strokes of the cane. His charges include culpable homicide not amounting to murder, ill-treating the victim and voluntarily causing hurt with a weapon.

The girl had been abused by both her mother and stepfather for months in 2020. Fazli made her perform physical exercises as punishment. He also struck her with items such as a wooden backscratcher and a cane when she made mistakes in her homework for instance or slept instead of studying. Roslinda made the victim eat chilli padi. She also poured hot water over her daughter on one occasion, blistering her skin. The child did not go to school for a few months because Fazli and Roslinda feared that her bruises and injuries would lead to the discovery of the abuse.

Man jailed 34.5 years for killing 5-year-old daughter, confining his children in toilet for months

For almost two years, two young siblings endured abuse and neglect from their father, including being confined naked in the toilet for almost 10 months. The man, who had trained in silat, taekwondo and aikido, would repeatedly punch, slap, kick and cane the children, treating them as "punching bags" for his frustration.

Ayeesha and her brother were the offender's biological children from his first marriage. They entered foster care in June 2014 but returned to live with the offender and his second wife in early 2015. The man worked as an auxiliary police officer or security officer for different companies from 2003 to 2016. From 2016 to April 2017, he worked in a fast food restaurant. He was unemployed after that. He started facing financial difficulties in 2015 and would buy less food and diapers. He and his wife also reduced the children's meals to twice a day.

Ayeesha and her brother started playing with and eating their own faeces because they were hungry, and they lost weight. Towards the end of 2015, the man and his wife started physically abusing the children by hitting them. Ayeesha was then three, while her brother was two.

The boy’s mother Zaidah, 41, and her boyfriend Zaini Jamari, 46, pleaded guilty on Thursday (Jun 23) to one count each for causing grievous hurt causing death, and three counts each for child abuse.

The couple and their one-year-old baby, together with Daniel, Zaidah’s son from a previous relationship, lived in a one-room Telok Blangah flat with two housemates, who witnessed the abuse. Man charged with outrage of modesty for alleged sexual assault of 2-year-old girl

A 59-year-old man has been accused of sexually assaulting a two-year-old girl. The Malaysian, who is a Singapore permanent resident, was charged in court on Dec 6 with one count of using criminal force to a person below 14 years old with intent to outrage modesty. He cannot be named because of a gag order to protect the victim’s identity.

The Straits Times has learnt that the offence took place in a pre-school. In response to ST’s query, a spokesperson for the Early Childhood Development Agency (ECDA) said the man, who is a non-teaching staff member, has been dismissed by the pre-school. “ECDA will not allow the staff to work in the pre-school sector while investigations are ongoing,” the agency added. The case has been adjourned to Dec 13.

Man who raped three of his daughters found unfit for caning, gets another 10 months' jail

A man who raped three of his daughters and sexually abused a fourth was given another 10 months' jail by the High Court on Monday (Oct 24) as he cannot receive the 24 strokes of the cane meted out to him. This is on top of his current jail term of 33 years and two months.

The 45-year-old Singaporean was certified to be permanently unfit for caning due to "mild congestive heart failure", the court heard. The former freelance kids' adventure camp instructor had admitted to raping or sexually assaulting four of his daughters between 2004 and 2018. His oldest daughter was sexually abused from the age of six or seven, and only his fifth and youngest daughter was spared.

The High Court, in sentencing him in March 2022, said he used his daughters as "his sex objects". The man also starved his daughters when he was angry with them and physically abused his wife and son.

Court cuts doctor's access to his children after ex-wife accuses him of sex, porn obsession

A court has cut a doctor’s access to his children as sought by his ex-wife, who claimed the man had an unhealthy obsession with pornography and sex with underage girls. All parties were not named in the judgment released on Tuesday (Oct 24) by the family division of the High Court.

The couple, a teacher and a doctor both aged 43, had married in 2006 and had two children together - a 15-year-old daughter and a 12-year-old son. The mother began divorce proceedings in 2021 and an interim judgment was given granting the divorce. The father was also granted certain access to his children as part of these arrangements.

However, the mother filed an application asking the court to limit her ex-husband’s access to the children, including to stop him from having any overnight or overseas access to their kids. She argued that her ex-husband had not used any of this access granted anyway, and that he spent very little time with the kids.

Father sentenced to 14 years' jail for strangling twin sons with autism

A man was sentenced on Tuesday (Aug 15) to 14 years' jail for killing his twin sons in January 2022, in a tragedy that shook the nation.

Xavier Yap Jung Houn claimed that he did so because he felt his wife had given up on the two 11-year-old boys, who had autism, and that killing them would take away his wife's burdens.

He also feared that his sons would be bullied by others, and that no one would take care of them after he and his wife died. In sentencing, Justice Vincent Hoong said the jail terms could not "in any way compensate" for the tragic loss of the two young lives.

Two young siblings had been left naked all the time in the toilet at home because they would often tear off their diapers and fill them up with water, their stepmother told the court on Thursday (July 6), adding that she felt "sad for them".

The 32-year-old woman was testifying as a prosecution witness in the trial of her husband — the children's biological father, who faces a single murder charge of abusing his daughter to death.

At the start of the trial on Wednesday, when asked what kind of feelings she had towards her stepchildren, she had said: "I don't feel anything." The court had heard that the the girl and her brother had been forced to live in the toilet of the family's one-room flat for around a year.

For about a year, a five-year-old girl and her younger brother were made to live in the bathroom of a one-room flat, naked, and only let out for meals or if their father or stepmother needed to use the toilet.

In August 2017, after being assaulted by her father for refusing to exercise, she died. The 43-year-old father now stands accused of assaulting her to death and began standing trial for murder in the High Court on Wednesday (July 5).

He faces a single charge of murder, which carries either life imprisonment or the death penalty. He cannot be named due to a gag order imposed by the court. The 43-year-old man cannot be named due to gag orders protecting the victim’s identity and her surviving brother, who might be a witness for other charges the man faces. The accused went on trial on Wednesday (Jul 5) for the charge of murder under Section 300(c), which is punishable by death or life imprisonment with caning.

He faces another 25 charges for offences including ill-treating his daughter and son by confining them in a toilet for about 10 months and punching his son when he was two years old, but these charges have been stood down temporarily while he is tried for murder.

Horrifying footage of a man lifting his four-year-old daughter up by her hair and punching her was played in court on Thursday, on the second day of his trial for murdering the girl in 2017 when she was five.

The 10-minute surveillance video, captured in 2016 and retrieved from his wife’s mobile phone, showed the man towering over the girl and her younger brother, who were wearing only diapers and barricaded in the “naughty corner” of a one-room flat.

In the video, he points a pair of scissors at the girl and appears to be scolding her before launching a vigorous attack on her. He grabs her by her hair and lifts her from the floor, rains punches and kicks on her, holds her against the wall by her neck, and canes her.

After pleading guilty to abusing their 11-year-old daughter by force feeding her chilli padi and hitting her repeatedly over the course of several months, a couple pleaded for leniency by telling the court that they, too, had been abused by others in the past.

The girl would eventually die from severe head injuries after an incident in which her stepfather struck her on the head repeatedly with a weightlifting bar. In their mitigation pleas before the High Court on Wednesday (July 5), the stepfather and the girl's biological mother said through their defence lawyers that they had been victims of child or spousal abuse previously, with a report stating this made the stepfather "more vulnerable to being an abuser himself".

But in their submissions, the prosecution countered that the mother had callously allowed the man to inflict injuries on the girl on several occasions.

Mother who abused 5-year-old son to death jailed for life, after court rejects prosecution's appeal for death sentence

A woman convicted of murdering her five-year-old son through various acts of abuse was on Tuesday (Oct 18) sentenced to life imprisonment, after the apex court decided that she should not receive the death penalty. Azlin Arujunah’s husband, Ridzuan Mega Abdul Rahman, had already been sentenced to a life term in July. On Tuesday, the Court of Appeal further ruled that he should not be caned

Both parents abused their son over a span of three months in 2016, scalding him with hot water on four occasions until he died on Oct 23 that year. He suffered severe injuries such as second- to third-degree burns over two-thirds of his body, nasal bone fractures and extensive bruises. The boy cannot be named to protect the identity of his surviving siblings.

Azlin and Ridzuan, now aged 30, were originally acquitted of murder and sentenced to 27 years’ jail each after a High Court trial. The prosecution then appealed against the sentences imposed on Azlin and Ridzuan. At the time, prosecutors sought life imprisonment in both cases, as well as for Azlin to be convicted of murder by common intention.

Justice Hoo Sheau Peng said that while this was a lengthy punishment, it was to reflect his “reprehensible conduct” of subjecting the victim to “sustained sexual assault” in the wee hours of March 27, 2016.

He cannot be named to protect the identity of his daughter, who is now 27 years old. The man had not learned from his previous brushes with the law either, the judge noted.

28 years’ jail, 24 strokes for father who raped daughter over 7 years

A 48-year-old man who raped his biological daughter over the course of seven years, from when she was seven or eight years old, was sentenced to 28 years in jail and 24 strokes of the cane at the High Court on Thursday (Aug 20).

When he first sexually assaulted her, she did not even know or understand what was being done to her, the court heard.

The father cannot be named due to a court order protecting the victim, who turns 17 this year. He had exposed his girl to pornographic videos that desensitised her to the heinous nature of the sexual assaults.

Youth pleads guilty to sexually abusing 9-year-old cousin for 3 years

When he was 13, he began molesting his nine-year-old cousin after seeing her come out of the shower at her Housing and Development Board flat.

Over the next three years, he repeatedly sodomised her and forced her to perform oral sex on him and told her to keep quiet about what he had done to her.

His offences only came to light when she thought she was pregnant and confided in her close friends about the abuse. They told their teachers who took the girl to lodge a police report.

Should Rapists above 50 yrs old be spared caning?
Rapists above 50 years old should not be spared caning, says President Halimah Yacob

President Halimah Yacob on Monday (Dec 19) suggested that rapists aged 50 or older should not be spared caning, in a Facebook post expressing her dismay at recent cases of children being raped in their own homes.
Under Singapore's Penal Code, a convicted rapist can be jailed up to 20 years and fined or caned. Those 50 years old and above cannot be sentenced to caning, but can be imprisoned longer in lieu of corporal punishment.

On Monday, Madam Halimah brought up the idea again, writing in a Facebook post: "Rapists should not be spared the cane just because they are fifty years old. It’s ironic that they could escape from the pain caused by caning despite the lifetime of severe trauma and irreparable damage that they cruelly inflicted on their victims which will last a lifetime. "In some cases, the rapes were committed earlier but reported only after the perpetrator reached fifty years old. It’s timely that we review this law," she added. "It’s our duty to protect our young and we must not fail them."

Last week, CNA reported a case of a 54-year-old man who was sentenced to jail for molesting his daughter repeatedly from when she was 10 years old. In November, a man admitted to trying to rape his four-year-old daughter twice, while another father went on trial for allegedly grooming his daughter over eight years before raping her when she was 12. "I find the recent spate of cases involving rapes of children in their own homes by their male relatives highly disturbing and sickening," Madam Halimah said. "We need to better protect our children from such sexual predators."

Repeat offender offered cash to underage girl in exchange for sexual services

A man who was sentenced to three months' jail in 2019 for attempting to obtain commercial sex from a minor did not learn his lesson and committed similar offences after he was released from prison.

For his latest offences, renovation contractor Andy Kow Yong Wen, now 45, took a 16-year-old girl to a Holland Road property where she performed oral sex on him on March 18 last year.

The Singaporean man then promised to pass her between $50 and $100 the next day. He later booked a room at a Beach Road hotel and sent the girl a text message, asking to meet her on March 19 that year.

Man posed as female medium to dupe two girls, aged 11 and 12, into sending him nude videos

A Singaporean man with paedophilic disorder posed as a female spiritual medium online to dupe two young girls in Taiwan into sending him their nude videos.

Lee Wei Ming claimed that he could sense evil spirits around his victims, who were 11 and 12 at the time.

He told the girls to send him their nude videos on the pretext that "she" could exorcise or dispel the supernatural entities. Lee warned the pair that that they would "suffer bodily harm" if they refused to comply.

HIV-positive man had unprotected sex with girl, 14, multiple times while still living with GF

An HIV-positive man released from prison in January 2019 returned to a life of crime later that year by having unprotected sex with an underage virgin who was unaware of his health condition.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Andre Ong said the offender had invited the 14-year-old girl to his home 17 times over three months and they had intercourse up to two times weekly. The court heard that she did not contract HIV.

Investigations revealed that the older girl had been molested when she was 17.

Man sexually assaulted daughter from when she 10 to 14 years old, warned her not to tell anyone

A man started sexually assaulting his daughter when she was about 10 years old, with the abuse only ceasing when she ran away from home for good nearly five years later.

He was convicted on Tuesday (June 1) of 15 charges - 14 for sexual assault by penetration and one for outrage of modesty - by Justice Audrey Lim after a trial in the High Court.

The man, who will turn 46 on Saturday, cannot be named due to a gag order to protect his daughter, who is 21 now. She was between 10 and 14 years old when he committed the offences from 2010 to 2014.

Record 45 years’ jail for Singapore Child sex offender

Over a span of 16 years, a man sexually preyed upon children with learning or physical disabilities by posing as a qualified educational therapist to gain their parents’ trust. On Monday (June 27), the Singaporean, now aged 54, was sentenced in the High Court to 45 years’ jail — the longest sentence ever meted out here for sexual offences, prosecutors said.

Justice Ang Cheng Hock described it as an “exceptionally sickening sexual abuse”, with the prosecution branding it “one of the worst cases of paedophilic sexual abuse that has come before the courts”. The man’s offences came to light only by accident in 2018 when a woman bought his old laptop. Several obscene photos and videos, showing him sexually assaulting the victims, were automatically imported from a cloud drive into the laptop.

He later admitted to investigators that he would watch child abuse material online and wanted to “try” the same on real-life subjects. He has since been diagnosed with paedophilic disorder. Two of his eight victims were only five years old when he began raping them. This typically took place in their own homes, his home or in public locations such as toilet cubicles in malls. He pleaded guilty to six counts of aggravated rape. Another 80 charges — including sexual exploitation of a minor, molestation and attempted aggravated rape — were taken into consideration for sentencing.

A man sexually preyed on four of his five daughters over 14 years. Some of them turned up in court at his sentencing and were in tears after the hearing was over

A 45-year-old man who repeatedly sexually abused his daughters, which a judge said was "one of the worst cases" of rape and sexual assault to come before the courts, was jailed 33 years and two months and given 24 strokes of the cane in the High Court on Friday (March 18).

Also among his slew of crimes was physically abusing his wife and children, including his younger son. The court also heard how he starved some of his children for almost a week as punishment for not doing household chores to his satisfaction. He sexually preyed on and molested four of his five daughters over 14 years, raping three of the girls until they reported him to the police.

High Court judge Tan Siong Thye said: "He destroyed the cherished values of (his victims') sanctuary and turned their home into a living hell. He caused unimaginable misery and untold torment for years." Before the man was finally arrested on Nov 17 in 2018, he worked as a freelance camp instructor for children’s adventure camps. His sentence was backdated to his date of arrest. He cannot be named due to a court order to protect the identities of his victims. Some of them turned up in court and were in tears after the hearing was over.

Father who raped 13-year old daughter jailed for 24 years

On February 26, 2020, it would seem that justice has prevailed for a now 16-year old girl whose 50-year old father was finally sentenced to 24 years in jail after molesting and raping her. The father, who cannot be named to keep the victim safe, along with his wife and two children, are all Chinese nationals living in Singapore with permanent residency (PR) status. They were living together in an HDB flat, while the father worked as a technician during the time that the incidents of molest and rapes took place.

It was back in October 2018 when the victim’s co-form teacher became concerned and decided to speak to her after hearing that she wanted to run away from home. Eventually, the teenager spoke out about her father touching her inappropriately, which prompted the teacher to inform the police.

The harrowing details of the events that took place were brought up in court. The father, who was said to have a ‘strained relationship’ with his wife for several years, was sleeping in a sectioned-portion of the living room while the wife slept in the master bedroom. The first time he molested his daughter was in the earlier portion of 2018 when she was just 13-years old. The first episode occurred while the daughter was on the computer. The father hugged her from behind and put his hands inside her shirt while he touched her breasts. Without knowing what else to do, she just chose to walk away.

The male teenager, now 17 years old, pleaded guilty on Wednesday (29 January) to one count of sexually assaulting a person under 14 years old. Probation and Reformative Training reports were called for the teen, who will return to court to be sentenced next Wednesday.

The court heard that the teen had watching pornography on his mobile phone in the kitchen toilet, on a day between June and September 2017. He was undressed and began masturbating with the door partially closed. About five minutes into the act, the teen’s stepsister opened the door and caught sight of the teen. The teen then reached for the child’s hand and coaxed her into the toilet.

When the girl refused, the teen grabbed her hand and brought it to his penis. He then tried to bring her head towards his genitals and asked her to perform a sexual act on him. The girl resisted until the teen said that he would give her chocolate as a reward. He forced himself on the girl for 10 seconds before letting her go. The girl then fled. The teen continued to watch pornography on his handphone afterwards.

An 18-year-old boy was sentenced to 21 months' probation on Wednesday (Jan 29) for repeatedly molesting his 12-year-old sister and asking her to masturbate him in return for K-pop merchandise.

He had molested his sister over her shorts last January (2019) while she was alone with him in his room to ask about homework. A month later, he argued with the girl over what to watch on television before picking her up, placing her on his bed and molesting her over her shirt.

In April, she walked in on her brother masturbating, and he followed her out to the living room where he repeatedly asked her to masturbate him, offering to buy her merchandise from Korean pop group BTS in return. The girl rejected her brother and lodged a police report saying she had been molested.

Probation for teen who offered sister BTS items for sexual act

A teen who molested his biological sister and offered her merchandise from Korean pop group BTS in exchange for a sexual act was given 21 months’ probation on Wednesday (29 January). Last month, the teen admitted to two counts of aggravated molest and one of attempting to procure an indecent act with his sister, who was then 12. A charge involving him hugging her from behind was taken into consideration for his sentencing.

The first offence took place in January last year when the girl asked him for help with her homework while in his room. As she sat beside him on his bed, the brother rubbed her genital area over her shorts for about five seconds. The girl then fled the room. The family moved house shortly after and the siblings shared a bedroom. A month after the first offence, as the siblings argued over what television programme to watch, the teen suddenly lifted his sister and molested her again before placing her on his bed. The girl then yelled at him to leave the bedroom and he did.

On 15 April, the girl returned home at about 6pm to find the door to their bedroom closed. After knocking and receiving no response for a while, the girl opened the door. Her brother had been masturbating but stopped when his sister opened the door. The girl then closed the door and went to the living room but her brother followed her. He repeatedly asked the victim to masturbate him and offered to buy her merchandise from BTS in return.

Teen who molested 12-year-old sister sentenced to 21 months' probation

An 18-year-old youth, who repeatedly asked his younger sister to sexually stimulate him and promised to buy her merchandise featuring popular Korean pop group BTS in return, was sentenced on Wednesday (Jan 29) to 21 months' probation. The 12-year-old girl had gone into her brother's room in January last year and sat on his bed. She bolted from the room when he suddenly rubbed her private parts with his hand.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Ryan Lim had earlier told District Judge Seah Chi-Ling: "The accused suddenly picked the victim up, carried the victim to their bedroom and laid her on his bed. "(The) accused used the fingers of his left hand to stroke the side of the victim's right breast over the victim's T-shirt in an upwards and downwards motion. The touching was non-fleeting." The girl yelled at her brother to get out of the bedroom and he complied.

DPP Lim had said that on April 15 last year, the girl came home at around 6pm and found that the door to their bedroom was closed. She knocked on the door and opened it after she received no response. The girl then saw her brother performing a sexual act. She closed the door and went to the living room. He came out and repeatedly asked her to sexually stimulate him. He also promised to buy her merchandise featuring BTS in return. She rejected his requests and made a police report nine days later.

Just months after being released from reformative training for a previous sex offence, a 22-year-old man lured a teenager he had met online to a staircase and pressurised her into having sex with him.

After the incident, the 13-year-old girl was left with "significant psychological and emotional scars" and diagnosed with a childhood emotional disorder, said District Judge Marvin Bay.

On Friday (Jan 10), Filipino Rojas Gil Dominic Barbosa was sentenced to four years and 11 months' jail and two strokes of the cane for one charge of sexual penetration of a minor.

By persistently badgering a 13-year-old girl to “bend to his will” and give in to his sexual demands, Gil Dominic Barbosa Rojas eventually coerced the minor into having sex with him at a secluded carpark.

For that, Rojas, a Singapore permanent resident, was jailed for four years and 11 months and will be given two strokes of the cane, the court heard on Friday (Jan 10). He was 22 at the time.

It was only until months later did the girl, who had suffered from emotional and psychological scars and attempted suicide, reveal to her mother that she had been assaulted.

Man, 42, sexually assaulted stepdaughter, as wife lay asleep beside him

At first, the stepfather limited himself to touching the victim’s private parts over her clothes. He began sexually assaulting her when she was in Primary 3, increasing the frequency of the abuse when his wife got pregnant.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Kavita Uthrapathy said that when his “lust for his stepdaughter grew”, so did the audacity of the various sex acts he committed on her up until Oct 14, 2016. He would sometimes do these while he lay in bed with the girl's mother. All this while, the victim pretended to be asleep because she was afraid that the man would get angry with her.

In one instance in 2015, she asked him to lie down next to her on her bed because there was a heavy thunderstorm and she was scared. He then sexually assaulted her.

After the second incident on Sept 30, 2016, the girl again told her mother about her father’s actions. She added that she felt “stickiness” on the back of her pants after that and went to change her clothes. The girl also complained to her maternal grandmother, who lived with them in the flat.

Man jailed 16 months for molesting 14-year-old daughter in her sleep

The court heard that the man began molesting his daughter in January last year. The two shared a bedroom and slept in the same queen-sized bed. It was not stated if the girl’s mother, who was working a night shift then, shared the same bedroom and bed.

He repeated his crime in March that year. The daughter was half-asleep when her father began molesting her. After some time, she turned to her side with her back facing him, hoping he would stop. He paused for a few minutes before continuing his actions.

Unable to endure it any longer, she sat up, pretending she had just been woken up by some movement and did not know what had happened. He similarly pretended nothing had happened, and they both left the bed.

29 years’ jail for man who sexually abused young daughter for almost 10 years

The court heard that the man began abusing the girl by touching her private parts. This happened in the flat they shared with the girl’s mother and her younger brother. About three years later, in 2009, he began performing sex acts on her on numerous occasions to satisfy a particular sexual fantasy.

In December 2011, the man took his two children to his sister’s flat for a sleepover during Christmas. All of them slept in a guest bedroom there. In the middle of the night, while the girl was asleep, he touched and violated her private parts. She was 11 years old then.

In 2012, he had sex with her without using a condom and then continued to engage in sexual acts with her at least once a month. This continued for several years even after she started to dislike what he was doing to her. He assaulted her less frequently towards the end of 2015, and the last time he had sex with her was in January 2016. She began to realise around then that what her father was doing was wrong, but she was concerned about telling her mother as it could tear her family apart. In May 2017, when she was in her first year of post-secondary education, she finally told a close friend that her father was having sex with her.

Man jailed for sexually assaulting young daughter over 4 years

The court heard that he started committing the offences when the girl was only eight years old. He was 45 at the time. His wife worked as a sales promoter, often returning home late as she had to work the night shift. The couple’s relationship had grown strained at this point due to financial problems. The victim has an older sister and a younger brother but she was particularly close to her father as she often sought his help for her homework.

On one occasion in 2010, when the girl was in Primary 2, she asked for help for her mathematics homework. He told her to go to his bedroom before closing and locking the door. He then removed his pants and told her to give him oral sex, which she did. After a few minutes, when his six-year-old son knocked on the door, he told her not to say anything to her siblings or mother. He then helped her with her homework after attending to the boy.

Sometime that same year, when she was watching television in the living room, he again told her to go to his bedroom. He got her to lie down on the bed and rubbed himself against her for five to 10 minutes. Again, he told her to keep it a secret. In 2011, he went further and got her to perform a sex act on him in his bedroom, while his other children were sleeping in the living room.

Man accused of sexual assault claims eight-year-old stepdaughter led him on

The court heard that the accused began living with the victim after marrying her mother in April 2013. The victim’s mother had gained custody of all her four children following her divorce from the victim’s biological father in 2009. Around January 2015, at the time the alleged crimes started, the victim was living in her maternal grandparents’ home along with mother, stepfather, their two children, her biological siblings, a grand-aunt and a maid.

DPP Kavita told the court that the victim, who had been addressing the accused as “abah”, or "father" in the Malay language, slept in the same bedroom as her mother, the accused and her stepsiblings. At first, the stepdad limited himself to just touching the victim’s private parts over her clothes, she said. However, as his “lust for his stepdaughter grew”, so did the audacity of the various sex acts he committed on her up until Oct 14, 2016.

Father of four convicted of repeatedly molesting daughter

The girl was 12 years old when her father molested her in the family’s master bedroom in 2015 — and she later told her mother three times about what he had done to her. The first time, the mother confronted her husband, who cried and begged her for forgiveness. After the 2015 incident, the grandmother told her daughter — the victim’s mother — that the girl had spent quite some time in the master bedroom with her father, adding that he came out with a “plastic” in his hand and threw it before going to work.

The grandmother also informed her that the girl complained that her buttock cheeks were feeling sore. The mother approached her daughter afterwards, told her she loved her a lot, and asked her to tell the truth. And the girl described the violation in vivid detail. The next day, the mother confronted her husband and he cried, begging for her forgiveness. About a year later, on Sept 30, 2016, the father again molested the girl. This time both were fully clothed.

The girl told her mother about the incident, noting that she felt “stickiness” on the back of her pants after that and went to change her clothes. The girl also complained to her grandmother, who said that the girl had approached her because she could not take it any more that the father had done this to her “very often”. On Oct 10, 2016, the father molested the girl again, this time involving skin-to-skin contact. Again, the girl told her mother about it. The mother reacted by texting the grandmother, who replied that the accused has “no shame”.

‘Monster’ dad gets 25.5 years’ jail, caning for prostituting wife, sexually abusing daughter and niece

In what the prosecution branded the “most aggravated case of human trafficking in Singapore”, a 27-year-old man was sentenced to 25-and-a-half years’ jail and the maximum 24 strokes of the cane on Tuesday (Feb 19). The unemployed father of two had pleaded guilty in the High Court to prostituting his wife, forcing their six-year-old daughter to perform sexual acts on him and molesting his 13-year-old niece in a hotel room. The man began physically assaulting his wife while they were dating and ramped up his abuse after they got married.

In 2016, after they had been married for four years, he demanded that she provide sexual services to pay for their infant son’s milk powder and other household expenses, imposing a “daily quota of customers”. Between June and late August that year, she ended up servicing 138 customers and earning nearly S$11,000 — money that she handed over to him. Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Eunice Lau noted that this was the first case of its kind, “where someone coerced his own wife to prostitute herself for financial profit”.

The man also forced their young daughter, now nine, to perform sex acts on him. While he suspected he had a sexually transmitted disease, he did not get diagnosed until after his arrest in August 2016. On another occasion, he asked his wife to take her niece, now 16, out of school on the day of her Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) oral exam and lead her to a hotel room. There, he groped the adolescent girl’s private parts and placed a pillow over her face to muffle her screams.

Fed up with his young son Weijie’s (not his real name) antics in school, & stressed out from his job as a salesman, the father began abusing him.

He would hit & kick him, and make derogatory remarks about the 9-yr-old, causing the child to melt down frequently. This led to Weijie’s grandfather filing a Personal Protection Order against him.

4 years on, the family is doing much better now. Weijie moved into a therapeutic group home for 2 years to receive therapy and counselling in a safe environment, after which Big Love Child Protection Specialist Centre counselled the father on how to improve his attitude & behaviour towards his son.

Spike in child abuse cases recorded in Singapore in recent years

A spike in cases involving child abuse has been recorded in recent years, with the Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF) observing an increase of 21 cases, from 873 in 2016 to 894 in 2017. An even more marked increase of 322 was recorded previously, from 551 in 2015 to 873 in 2016.

Big Love, an initiative by welfare body Montfort Care set up in 2013, received 367 of such cases between Apr last year and Mar this year. The recorded figure shows an increase from the recorded 252 cases during the same period in 2017, and 177 in 2016, according to TODAY. Director Serene Tan posited that the spike might have resulted from more people coming forward to report cases of child abuse, and also the increasing number of professionals who have been equipped with the skills to recognise if a child has been abused.

A research project next year will be launched by MSF in 2019 to investigate possible reasons for the increase in child abuse cases, and, based on its findings, the Ministry will subsequently work on starting initiatives to remedy the roots of child abuse.

Child abuse in families is on the rise in Singapore, said Big Love Child Protection Specialist Centre, and the proposed changes to the law to mete out tougher penalties to child abusers is just one of the ways to tackle the growing number of cases.

Spike in child abuse

When a child is abused by a stranger, family members are quick to report the crime.

Not so when the abuser is a family member, said social workers.

People have to be trained to spot signs of children being ill-treated by family members, including physical and sexual abuse, and neglect. Over the past 2 years, more people have been trained to better detect abuse cases, which has led to a spike in the number of cases investigated.

Yet, pre-schools have been found to be inadequate in spotting signs of child abuse, said experts, who called for regular standardised training for the teachers, which is currently not available.

This is important as many child abusers are immediate family members & pre-school educators become an important line of defence for the children, they said.

Rev Goh also assured that there have been no cover-ups in Singapore's archdiocese, and that guidelines have been put in place to reduce the risk of such abuses, said the Archbishop in a pastoral letter on Saturday addressed to the Church.

Signs of Child Molestation

Sexual molestation is the indecent behavior of a dominant, older individual who coerces a child into sexual activity. Today, more than three million American children are victims of sexual abuse, and approximately 300,000 children are molested every year.

Molestation can manifest itself in many forms. The scope of behaviors that a perpetrator can exhibit is great, and includes sensual kissing, inappropriate touching or fondling of the child’s genitals, breast or buttock, masturbation of a child, oral-genital contact, genital-genital contact, penetration with fingers and child prostitution. Sexual abuse accounts for 9.2% of all types of child abuse, following neglect, physical abuse and other undefined types of maltreatment.

Fun day turns bad - According to Yahoo News Singapore, the 12-year-old Singapore girl had gone to Universal Studios with friends. She boarded the "Revenge of the Mummy" ride with 2 of her friends. An Indian national ended up sitting next to her, on the right.

The Revenge of the Mummy ride is an indoor rollercoaster and operates in dimly lit conditions. At the beginning of the ride, the vehicle moves slowly and stops briefly, before reversing at high speed. It was at this point that the girl felt the man stroking her right thigh. She tried to ignore his advances, but by the end of the ride, the poor girl was quite traumatised. She had been touched inappropriately five times, including on the breast.

Ex-teacher found guilty of molesting 2 young girls at learning centre in Singapore!

She was 7 then, and a student at an Orchard Road enrichment centre. During lessons, her teacher would sit next to her and, from beneath the table where no one could see, slip his hand under her clothes. This happened on many occasions.

She was nervous and scared but dared not tell anyone lest her teacher scold her. Every Sunday, from 2:30-4:00 pm, she would attend classes at an Orchard Road enrichment centre, conducted by Ian Lewis, a reading specialist teacher.

Each class had about four to six students and yet, Lewis, a British man, was able to get his way with the girl. It took an episode of Crime Watch (which had a tutor behaving indecently with a student) for the girl to realise that she had been harmed. She confided in her mum.

Angry Father Slaps & Forces Young Daughter to Kneel in an IKEA Carpark

Well, this doesn’t seem right!  Punishing a child when they do something wrong can teach them how to make good decisions next time but do make sure that it is an appropriate punishment.

Recently, Stomp reported that a man was caught on camera slapping and forcing his young child to kneel in a public place while another lady who was with them watched helplessly. The incident took place at a carpark in IKEA Tampines, Singapore on a Monday (5 November 2018) night.

The person who witnessed and recorded the shocking incident told Stomp that the whole ordeal took place at around 9pm. The source was quoted by Stomp as saying, “The man was seen shouting and slapping a girl, believed to be his daughter, and asking her to kneel down.” The source, who doesn’t wish to be named, said that he isn’t sure why the father was so angry at the poor child. The girl looked like she was about five or six years old.

More must be done to help victims of child sexual abuse

I laud the report on child sexual abuse cases in Singapore (When home is where the sex abuse is, for kids; Aug 26).

Media attention is now focused on the exceptional failings of the Roman Catholic Church as its widespread and& decades-long sexual abuse scandal unfolds.

Few media outlets have highlighted the far larger public health issue, where a majority of sexual abuse cases occur in the home, often by a family member.

To most children, items like hangers and cloth rags are just everyday household objects.

But for 2 brothers, these were things to be feared. The boys, aged 4 and 6, were beaten daily with such items by their parents.

The boys both have global developmental delay & their parents thought this was the appropriate way to discipline their special-needs children.

When the teacher is the bully
Bullying has become a national issue. But what do you do if the school bully is your child's teacher?

When Karen Eubank’s son first complained about his “mean” teacher, she took it with a grain of salt. “Usually ‘mean’ just means a teacher makes you study, is demanding, or wants you to answer questions,” says the Dallas, TX mom. “Not that [the teacher’s] being verbally abusive.”

Unfortunately, that’s exactly what it meant. Eubank had transferred her son from a private school to a new charter that a friend recommended. During the tour, Eubank fell in love with the school — there was a garden, they played music at lunch, the school was “just beautiful,” she says.

But after the school year began, her fourth grader began saying that he didn’t want to go to school. Every day before school, he claimed he felt nauseated. Every afternoon at pickup, he was angry. Eubank assumed the boy was just adjusting to his new school. It wasn’t until Halloween that Eubanks discovered the chilling truth. She asked a child in the class next door to her son’s how he liked school. He replied it that he was fine, but that her son “wasn’t having such a good time.” The teacher, the boy told her, “yells at him all the time and we can hear it in the next room.”

Pedophilia

Pedophilia is an ongoing sexual attraction to pre-pubertal children. It is a paraphilia, a condition in which a person's sexual arousal and gratification depends on objects, activities, or even situations that are considered atypical. Pedophilia is defined as recurrent and intense sexually arousing fantasies, sexual urges, or behaviors involving sexual activity with a prepubescent child or children—generally age 13 years or younger—over a period of at least six months. Pedophiles are more often men and can be attracted to either or both sexes.

Pedophilic disorder can be diagnosed in people who are willing to disclose this paraphilia, as well as in people who deny any sexual attraction to children but demonstrate objective evidence of pedophilia. For the condition to be diagnosed, an individual must either act on their sexual urges or experience significant distress or interpersonal difficulty as a result of their urges or fantasies. Without these two criteria, a person may have pedophilic sexual desires but not pedophilic disorder. The prevalence of pedophilic disorder is unknown, as the social stigma around it does not invite people to self-identify. Estimates of its prevalence range from one to five percent of the male population. There are believed to be only a small fraction of a percent of women, if any at all, who experience pedophilia.

Pedophilic sexual offenders are usually family, friends, or relatives of their victims. The types of pedophilic activities vary, and may include just looking at a child or undressing and touching a child. However, acts often involve oral sex or touching the genitals of the child or the offender. Studies suggest that children who feel uncared for or lonely may be at higher risk for sexual abuse.
