One person was found dead in a burning bedroom after a fire broke out in a Housing Board flat in Sembawang on Feb 24. The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it was alerted to the fire at Block 131C Canberra Crescent at 12.45pm. Firefighters from Yishun Fire Station arrived to find black smoke billowing from a unit on the third floor and forced their way into the smoke-logged flat, SCDF said in a Facebook post. The blaze is believed to have started in the burnt bedroom of the three-room flat, where the man was found and pronounced dead by an SCDF paramedic.

This marks the second known death caused by a home fire this year in a span of only two months. According to SCDF’s latest annual statistics report, there were three fatalities in 2023 and eight in 2022. Close to 2,000 fires were recorded in 2023, marking an 8.6 per cent rise from 1,799 in 2022.

The top two causes were electrical fires and unattended cooking flames. The number of fires sparked by mobility devices – personal mobility devices, power-assisted bicycles and personal mobility aids – also spiked, reversing a three-year decline from 2019 to 2022.

An early morning fire in 2022 in a Bedok North flat that took the lives of three people was caused by a cigarette that had been left unattended for 10 to 15 minutes.

Its hot ash and embers likely ignited the cardboard boxes it had been left on, which started a fire on May 13, 2022, that raged through a flat at Block 409 Bedok North Avenue 2, where five people were living.

Delivering his findings on Nov 22, State Coroner Adam Nakhoda ruled that the deaths of home owner Aileen Chan, 56, and two of her tenants – Malaysian Tan Soon Keong, 35, and his three-year-old daughter Hui En – were an unfortunate misadventure.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it was alerted to a fire at a sixth-storey Housing Board flat at Block 63 Lorong 5 Toa Payoh at about 9pm. Four occupants had evacuated from the affected unit before firefighters arrived. Two people from the affected unit were taken to KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital, it added.

SCDF said preliminary investigation showed the fire had likely originated from the battery pack of a Personal Mobility Aid that was charging in the living room. A 15-year-old boy and his mother returned to the flat on Friday morning to clean up. The teenager said he was in the living room when the fire broke out, while his parents and his two-year-old sister were in a bedroom. He told Shin Min that the battery pack had suddenly caught fire in the living room, but as it was closer to the bedroom, he rushed downstairs to get help. When he returned, his family had already evacuated from the flat. He added that his father and a neighbour tried to extinguish the fire with water but to no avail.

A raging fire that killed three people in a Bedok North flat in 2022 was likely caused by an unattended cigarette left by the home owner’s boyfriend.

Another HDB Fire Broke Out This Morning, The 4th HDB Fire So Far in 7 Days

Singapore is a hot country, but four fires in seven days is a bit much. At around 7am on Friday (19 Aug), a fire broke out in a three-room flat on the sixth storey of Block 3 Upper Aljunied Lane.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force stated that they were alerted to the fire at 7:05am, and subsequently extinguished the flames with a water jet. Although the fire was mostly contained in the living room, the walls of the flat were charred and the unit sustained heat and smoke damage. According to SCDF, three residents fled their homes on their own before the officers arrived, while 10 other people from nearby units had to be evacuated.

This is the fourth fire in seven days. Last Friday (12 Aug), a HDB flat in Toa Payoh went up in flames, and 50 residents had to be evacuated from the building. On Tuesday morning (16 Aug), another unit in Jurong East caught fire, killing a 48-year-old man who happened to be one of the occupants of the house. The Jurong East flat caught fire again the next morning, likely because the deeply-seated embers under the debris rekindled despite the firefighters’ best efforts to dampen down the heated surfaces.

A fire broke out in a sixth-floor unit at Block 3 Aljunied Lane during the early hours of Friday, Aug. 19, resulting in the evacuation of 13 people.

The fire was subsequently extinguished with a water jet by SCDF officers. SCDF said it evacuated 10 people from nearby units, while three others had self-evacuated prior to the arrival of SCDF officers. Two individuals were assessed by medics as a precautionary measure, but they did not want to be taken to the hospital, SCDF said.

This is the fourth case of fire in a HDB unit in the month of August. Previously, a fire in a unit at Block 222 Lorong 8 Toa Payoh resulted in 50 people being evacuated by the police and SCDF, the SCDF said in a Twitter post. On Aug. 16, a fire in a Jurong East unit left one dead. Another fire broke out in the same unit again just a day later on Aug. 17. In its statement, the SCDF reminded the public not to leave lit materials, such as candles, tealights and incense sticks unattended and to extinguish these before leaving home.

Bukit Batok fire: MP Murali Pillai apologises over locked hose reel cabinets, says 2 town council staff to be disciplined

Bukit Batok SMC Member of Parliament Murali Pillai apologised on Friday (15 November) over the fire incident at a block in his ward where firefighters at the scene encountered padlocked hose reel cabinets and the absence of water supply.

On 1 November, Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) firefighters arrived at Block 210A Bukit Batok Street 21 to combat a fire at the 13th floor. They came across the padlocked cabinets and had to break one of them to access the hose reel but were unable to use it as there was no water supply. Instead, they extinguished the fire using water from the SCDF’s emergency vehicles.

In a post on his Facebook page on Friday, Murali said, “As your elected representative, I am politically accountable to you for these issues...These incidents should not have happened and, for that, I must apologise. I will work with my elected & appointed Town Councillors to review this case and ensure that the fire safety system is strengthened to ensure its reliability.”

Dr Chee says fire hose saga is a prime example of how the opposition should work
"That’s how politics should be conducted, without fear but always in a professional and principled manner devoid of character assassination and personal ruin,"

His comments came hours after ruling party MP Murali Pillai apologised for the lapses uncovered by the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) with regards to a fire that broke out at Block 210A Bukit Batok Street 21 on Nov 1.

After a raging blaze broke out at the 13th-storey unit at the HDB block,SCDF firefighters found that the fire hose reel cabinets at the block were padlocked and discovered that there was no water supply for the hose reel when they broke one of the padlocks.

The problems with the fire hose reel is said to have delayed the rescue attempt and the SCDF subsequently revealed it issued Fire Hazard Abatement Notices to Jurong-Clementi Town Council (JCTC) over these two issues. JCTC later said the fire hose reel was in normal working condition two weeks prior to the fire but added that it accepts the SCDF’s report that it was not working when the fire occurred.
