International Women's Day 2026


International Women's Day is a worldwide celebration of women's social, economic, cultural, and political achievements.

The day also serves as a rallying cry for greater gender equality. Worldwide, there is a lot of activity as people come together to celebrate women's accomplishments or to rally for women's equality.

From Suffrage To Sisterhood: What Is Feminism And What Does It Mean?

Held on March 8, International Women’s Day celebrates the progress women have made over the last century, and the inspiring women who helped make that progress happen. From the suffragist movement of the 1800s to the 2017 Women’s March in Washington, women have used the power of language and oration to inspire countless people.

Early feminism was heavily influenced by the Enlightenment in Europe during the late 1700s. The movement focused on reason and equality for all, and it ultimately inspired the American and French Revolutions. Think of the Declaration of Independence: “We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” Of course, that whole all men are created equal thing didn’t apply to women or people of color at the time. That was a problem and a great source of tension for early feminism.

In the UK, Mary Wollstonecraft, an early feminist, published A Vindication of the Rights of Women in 1792, promoting the then-radical idea that women be educated on the same level as their male peers. The word feminism itself was first coined in 1837 by French philosopher, Charles Fourier (as féminisme). It originally referred to “feminine qualities or character,” but that sense isn’t used any more. Toward the end of the century, the word came to refer to equal rights for women and became inextricably linked to the suffragist movement.

Water price to rise from April 2025

Water will soon cost consumers an additional 50 cents per cubic m, starting with a 20-cent increase in April 2024 and a 30-cent rise in April 2025. This means that most households will fork out an additional $4 to $9, excluding goods and services tax (GST), for their monthly water bill by 2025, said national water agency PUB on Wednesday.

In 2020, the average monthly consumption of water was 15 cubic m for condominiums and 16.2 cubic m for HDB flats. Lower- and middle-income households will get help to offset some of the price increase. Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Lawrence Wong will announce cost-of-living support measures to provide more relief for Singaporean households on Thursday.

The last water price hike of 30 per cent happened in 2017. The upcoming 50-cent rise – bringing the cost of 1 cubic m, or 1,000 litres, of water to $3.24 – is an 18 per cent increase. The price hike between 1997 and 2000 saw water prices rising by 120 per cent for households. The upcoming increase comes amid rising living costs, GST hikes and higher transport fares, and the water agency did not take the decision lightly, said a PUB spokesman.

Water prices in Singapore will rise by about 18 per cent over the next two years, national water agency PUB said on Wednesday (Sep 27). Potable water currently costs S$2.74 (US$2.01) for every 1,000 litres, or per cubic metre, before tax for most households.

The increase translates to an additional 50 cents per cubic metre. It will be split over two phases: 20 cents on Apr 1, 2024 and 30 cents on Apr 1, 2025. After the 2025 revision, three in four households will see a less than S$10 increase in their monthly water bills, PUB said. For businesses, three in four will see their water bills rise by less than S$25 a month while three in four hawkers will foot an increase of less than S$15 monthly.

The 4 per cent of households that consume much more water – exceeding 40 cubic metres a month – will see a higher increase in their bills. For every cubic metre of water above the threshold, the rate they pay will rise by 70 cents, from S$3.69 now to S$3.94 next year and S$4.39 the year after. The average household consumes about 15 cubic metres of water each month.

  • How much more will I have to pay? - If you consume up to 40 cubic metres of water, you will have to pay an additional 50 cents per cubic metre. The hike will be implemented over two phases: 20 cents on Apr 1, 2024 and 30 cents on Apr 1, 2025.
  • What help will I get? - The Ministry of Finance will on Thursday announce additional support measures to help households with the impact of the water price increase and other cost of living concerns. Meanwhile, all one-, two- and three-room households can apply for e-vouchers under the Climate Friendly Households Programme to offset the costs of installing water-efficient shower fittings.
  • How much more will businesses have to pay? - Three in four businesses, including small and medium enterprises will experience an increase of less than S$25 in their monthly water bills. Three out of four hawkers will see an increase of less than S$15 per month.
  • When were water prices last raised? - Water prices were last raised by 30 per cent in 2017, also over two phases. Announced in Budget 2017, the water prices were raised for the first time since 2000 to reflect the costs of water supply and to maintain Singapore's water infrastructure.
  •  Why are prices going up this time? - The latest price increase is due to rising operating costs and heavier investment in water infrastructure. The cost of producing and supplying water has gone up substantially since the last price revision, PUB said.


Water price to rise from April 2024; Government to provide support for lower- and middle-income households

Water price will be revised in two phases on 1 April 2024 and 1 April 2025, to reflect the rising costs of producing and supplying water. Water security is essential for Singapore. Water is a strategic resource that all of us – individuals, businesses, and the Government – must safeguard. Through long-term planning and continual investments in critical water infrastructure, Singapore has developed the Four National Taps1 to ensure a safe and reliable water supply to meet the needs of our population and economy. In Singapore, water is priced to recover the full cost of its supply and production, and to reflect the cost of producing the next drop of water. This right pricing of water also encourages water conservation by households and industries, to achieve a sustainable growth in water demand.

Even with active cost mitigation measures by PUB and our contractors, the cost of producing and supplying water has increased substantially since the last price revision in 2017, due to external cost pressures. Average electricity market tariffs have increased by about 37%, adding to PUB’s energy costs as we increasingly tap on energy-intensive sources such as NEWater and desalination to meet growing water demand. Construction costs in Singapore have also gone up by 35% across the industry2, with higher increases for specialised works PUB must undertake, such as tunnelling and pipeline projects through highly urbanised areas. PUB’s expenses for essential chemicals in water and used water treatment have increased by about 33%, due to inflationary pressures and supply chain disruptions. Similarly, maintenance expenses have risen by 18% due to higher manpower costs for contracted services.

Singapore’s water demand is projected to almost double by 2065 in tandem with economic and population growth. Climate change will also put greater strain on our local catchment and imported water which are weather-dependent. To ensure the security and sustainability of our water supply, we will need to maintain long-term investments in water infrastructure and further develop ourweather-resilient water sources such as NEWater and desalinated water, which are more energy-intensive and costlier to produce. The current potable water price is set at $2.74 per cubic metre. To meet the higher costs of supplying and producing water, the potable water price will increase by 50 cents per cubic metre (equivalent to 1,000 litres of water). This will be implemented in two phases – an increase of 20 cents per cubic metre from 1 April 2024, and a further 30 cents per cubic metre from 1 April 2025. This would represent an increase in water price of about 2.5% per year since the last price revision. The phased approach, with a smaller increase in the first year, is intended to help households and businesses adjust to the price increase and allow more time for the adoption of water conservation measures. For NEWater customers, the NEWater price will increase by 17 cents per cubic metre, similarly carried out in two phases

DBS chief Piyush Gupta retires on 28 Mar 2025

DBS Group said on Wednesday that Tan Su Shan, the firm’s head of institutional banking, will succeed Chief Executive Piyush Gupta upon his retirement in March, making her the first female CEO of Singapore’s biggest bank. Tan, who joined the bank in 2010, will serve as the deputy CEO till then, DBS said in a statement.

CEO Piyush Gupta retires on 28 March 2025, when the bank hosts its next annual general meeting. The banking veteran spent her first three years in the firm building DBS’ wealth management and institutional banking businesses, which account for 90% of the company’s income. Tan’s appointment will also make her the first internal candidate to succeed as CEO, DBS Chairman Peter Seah told reporters in an earnings briefing on Wednesday.

The recent appointment ends a long period of conjecture about who would take over from 64-year-old Gupta, a prominent figure in Asian banking who has been at the helm of DBS for 14 years. Gupta has been instrumental in reshaping the bank’s culture and upgrading its technology to meet the challenges posed by emerging digital banking competitors.

DBS Group Holdings CEO Piyush Gupta, one of the highest profile bankers in Southeast Asia, will step down next year, the Singaporean lender said Wednesday, in what would be its first leadership change in 15 years. Gupta, 64, will be succeeded by Tan Su Shan when he retires at the next general meeting on March 28, DBS said. Tan was appointed deputy chief executive on Wednesday in addition to her current role as the group's head of institutional banking.

"Su Shan has worked closely with me for more than a decade to bring the bank to where it is today," Gupta said in a statement. "With her appointment, we can be assured that the trajectory of DBS' transformation will continue well into the future." Tan will become the first woman to lead Southeast Asia's largest lender by assets. With over 35 years of industry experience, the 56-year-old has also worked in other major financial centers including Hong Kong, Tokyo and London.

DBS said Tan's appointment was the culmination of a "decade long succession process." Tan joined DBS from Morgan Stanley in 2010 and spent her first years at the lender building its wealth management business. She subsequently managed its consumer banking, wealth management and institutional banking businesses, which account for 90% of the lender's income. "Leading the continued transformation of DBS is a tremendous privilege and responsibility," Tan said in a statement. "I am proud of the founding mission of DBS -- financing Singapore's growth -- and will continue to ensure that it is a brand that stands tall not just in Asia but also [on] the world stage."

DBS Bank chief executive Piyush Gupta will retire in 2025 after 15 years at the helm of South-east Asia’s largest bank. DBS banker Tan Su Shan will replace Mr Gupta, 64, when he retires at the next annual general meeting on March 28, 2025. Ms Tan said: “I’m very grateful for this big opportunity. I’m also very mindful that this is a huge responsibility.” This will be the first time the bank has filled the top job internally.

The board has also appointed Ms Tan as deputy CEO, in addition to her present role as group head of institutional banking, it announced on Aug 7. Ms Tan, 56, has had more than 35 years of experience in consumer banking, wealth management and institutional banking, with stints in Hong Kong, Tokyo and London. She joined DBS in 2010 and spent the first three years building the lender’s wealth management unit before running the consumer banking and wealth business and the institutional banking division. The businesses account for 90 per cent of DBS’ income.

DBS chairman Peter Seah told the bank’s results briefing on Aug 7 that the board had engaged an independent consultant to assess candidates for the CEO role. The process started after Mr Gupta said in 2021 that he would like to retire by the time he turns 65 in 2025. Mr Seah said: “Su Shan stood out as the best... The board’s decision to appoint Su Shan was unanimous.” Other contenders for the role included DBS head of consumer banking group and wealth management Shee Tse Koon and Singapore country head Han Kwee Juan, according to various recent media reports. Mr Seah noted that Ms Tan “came in and built a very strong foundation for wealth management. She’s been a very well-respected private banker. She’s covered the two big parts of the bank that contribute the lion’s share of the bank’s income, and she has performed well”.

After almost 15 years as chief executive officer (CEO) of Singapore's biggest bank DBS, Mr Piyush Gupta will step down when he retires on March 28, 2025. The bank announced his imminent departure at its second-quarter financial results media briefing for 2024 on Wednesday (Aug 7).

The 64-year-old is set to be replaced by Ms Tan Su Shan, 56, the group head of institutional banking. The board has also appointed Ms Tan as deputy CEO in the interim. Before joining DBS in 2010, Ms Tan was managing director at investment banking giant Morgan Stanley. She was also a former Nominated Member of Parliament from 2012 to 2014.

Mr Gupta joined DBS in November 2009 after a 27-year stint at Citigroup, where he served as its CEO for Southeast Asia, Australia and New Zealand. Under his leadership, DBS had earned numerous accolades from various industry bodies, including the title of World’s Best Digital Bank in 2016 — awarded by Euromoney magazine for the bank’s efforts in digital innovation. It marked the first time that an Asian bank won a global accolade from the leading financial publication.

After 15 years at the helm of Singapore's largest lender, DBS CEO Piyush Gupta will leave his post. DBS announced on Wednesday (Aug 7) that Mr Gupta will retire at the next annual general meeting on Mar 28, 2025.

The bank's group head of institutional banking Tan Su Shan, 56, will succeed him. During an analyst briefing in May, Mr Gupta, 64, was asked about chatter in the market that he could retire this year. "No, I am not retiring this year," he responded at the time.

At a media briefing on Wednesday, Mr Gupta said that in 2021, he told the board that he wanted to retire at the age of 65. "43 years of a banking career, 15 years of having run DBS, and it would be a great time to pass the baton," he said.

Piyush Gupta, CEO of Singapore's biggest bank DBS Group and one of the highest-paid CEOs in the city-state, saw his total compensation drop 27.3 per cent for 2023, according to the lender's annual report published on Wednesday (March 6).

Mr Gupta's total compensation fell to S$11.2 million in 2023 from S$15.4 million in 2022, the annual report showed. The lower total compensation followed a cut in variable pay to take accountability for last year's digital banking disruptions at DBS, even as Southeast Asia's largest lender posted a record 2023 profit with a return of equity of 18 per cent.

"Despite record 2023 profits and outperformance in many areas, the gaps in technology resiliency resulted in a lower scorecard appraisal by the Board compared to the previous year," the bank said in its annual report. DBS added that its falling short in technology resiliency and the resultant impact on customers and franchises "were taken into account when determining the scorecard performance of both the Group and the CEO".

He is vice-chairman of the Institute of International Finance, and a board member of Enterprise Singapore.

In 2009, he left Citigroup to join DBS Group as the CEO. As CEO, he received various business awards and has been credited with growing DBS to become a leading Asian financial services group.[8][4] Early on in 2013, Gupta also realized that DBS needed to start thinking like big tech. "Our frame of reference had to be Amazon or Alibaba. We had to stop thinking about what others banks will do. We had to start thinking about what big tech will do.

In 2024, he announced on August 7 that he would step down from his role on March 28, 2025. Tan Su Shan was appointed deputy CEO with immediate effect and will succeed him.

Steve Jobs would have turned 68 years old today. The recently announced Steve Jobs Archive has shared a special snapshot in time of the late Apple co-founder and the Macintosh to mark the date. In the photo, Steve Jobs is seen closely examining a person using the newly introduced Macintosh in a store window in New Orleans in 1984.

The photo was shot 39 years ago in February 1984. The original Macintosh was introduced only a month earlier. Leslie Berlin, who is the founding Executive Director of the Steve Jobs Archive, shares the story behind the image of Jobs spotting the Mac in the wild nearly 40 years ago.

“Steve’s friend Jean Pigozzi, who calls himself a “serious amateur photographer,” took the image and told me the story behind it,” Berlin writes. “Although Jean did not work in tech, Steve invited him along to a software conference in New Orleans. One evening after the event, as they were walking down O’Keefe Avenue looking for dinner, Steve—a notoriously fast walker—pulled to a halt. Someone in a store window was working on a Macintosh.”

Steven Paul Jobs (February 24, 1955 – October 5, 2011) was an American entrepreneur, business magnate, industrial designer, media proprietor, and investor. He was the co-founder, chairman, and CEO of Apple; the chairman and majority shareholder of Pixar; a member of The Walt Disney Company's board of directors following its acquisition of Pixar; and the founder, chairman, and CEO of NeXT. He is widely recognized as a pioneer of the personal computer revolution of the 1970s and 1980s, along with his early business partner and fellow Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak.

Jobs was born in San Francisco to a Syrian father and German-American mother. He was adopted shortly after his birth. Jobs attended Reed College in 1972 before withdrawing that same year. In 1974, he traveled through India seeking enlightenment before later studying Zen Buddhism. He and Wozniak co-founded Apple in 1976 to sell Wozniak's Apple I personal computer. Together the duo gained fame and wealth a year later with production and sale of the Apple II, one of the first highly successful mass-produced microcomputers. Jobs saw the commercial potential of the Xerox Alto in 1979, which was mouse-driven and had a graphical user interface (GUI). This led to the development of the unsuccessful Apple Lisa in 1983, followed by the breakthrough Macintosh in 1984, the first mass-produced computer with a GUI. The Macintosh introduced the desktop publishing industry in 1985 with the addition of the Apple LaserWriter, the first laser printer to feature vector graphics.

In 1985, Jobs was forced out of Apple after a long power struggle with the company's board and its then-CEO, John Sculley. That same year, Jobs took a few Apple employees with him to found NeXT, a computer platform development company that specialized in computers for higher-education and business markets. In addition, he helped to develop the visual effects industry when he funded the computer graphics division of George Lucas's Lucasfilm in 1986. The new company was Pixar, which produced the first 3D computer-animated feature film Toy Story (1995) and went on to become a major animation studio, producing over 25 films since.

In 1997, Jobs returned to Apple as CEO after the company's acquisition of NeXT. He was largely responsible for reviving Apple, which was on the verge of bankruptcy. He worked closely with English designer Jony Ive to develop a line of products that had larger cultural ramifications, beginning with the "Think different" advertising campaign and leading to the Apple Store, App Store (iOS), iMac, iPad, iPod, iPhone, iTunes, and iTunes Store. In 2001, the original Mac OS was replaced with the completely new Mac OS X (now known as macOS), based on NeXT's NeXTSTEP platform, giving the operating system a modern Unix-based foundation for the first time. In 2003, Jobs was diagnosed with a pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor. He died of respiratory arrest related to the tumor on October 5, 2011, at the age of 56. In 2022, he was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
