Singapore celebrated 54 years of independence with a spectacle at the historic Padang.

Besides Singapore Cabinet ministers and President Halimah Yacob, also in attendance were the leaders of neighbouring countries – Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, Indonesian President Joko Widodo and Bruneian Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah.

Singapore turned 54 in style, with a colourful birthday bash at the Padang attended by 27,000 people, including Brunei's Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, Indonesian President Joko Widodo and Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad.

The National Day parade which comes amid Singapore's year-long bicentennial commemorations, was a nod to old and new, featuring a massive glittering lion prop and the return of the popular mobile column segment after four years.

National Day Rally 2019 to be held on Aug 18

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong will deliver the National Day Rally speech on Aug 18 this year, said the Prime Minister's Office on Monday (Mar 11). It will take place at the Institute of Technical Education in Ang Mo Kio, the same venue as last year.

The speech is seen as the most important political speech of the year.

Last year, Mr Lee devoted a large part of his speech to housing concerns, and announced two major schemes to renew Housing and Development Board (HDB) flats. He also announced the Merdeka Generation Package, which will help Singaporeans born in the 1950s with healthcare costs.
