Landslide In Outram Near York Hill Occurred Due To Continuous Heavy Rain On 2 Jan

Just 3 days into the new year, Singapore has already seen unprecedented levels of heavy rain and cold weather due to the La Nina phenomenon. While many are relishing the aircon weather, the torrential downpour has started wreaking havoc around the island with flash floods.

Now, landslides have also occurred, with one that took place behind Furama Riverfront Hotel — near York Hill and Outram Secondary School in Outram. Authorities have been alerted to the incident and the area is now cordoned off for repair works. In a video posted by SG Road Vigilante, muddy soil can be seen sliding down a slope in Outram on Saturday (2 Jan).

Minor soil slippage at 3 other locations. Apart from Outram, SLA noted that several minor soil slippage incidents also took place at:

Kusu Island
Lazarus Island
St John’s Island

Fallen tree branch pierces car windscreen at Jalan Bukit Ho Swee

When engineer Philip Toh heard a loud bang during his family gathering at Jalan Bukit Ho Swee on Sunday afternoon (Jan 14), he assumed that it was a traffic accident.

But when the 39-yr-old rushed out of the HDB unit to check, he saw a 2-metre long tree branch pierced into his car's front windscreen.

"The windscreen was obviously damaged. The impact of the branch also caused a dent in the car's bonnet," Mr Toh told Channel NewsAsia.

Fallen rain tree in Margaret Drive damages 2 cars and a lamp post

An 8m-tall rain tree in Margaret Drive fell on Sunday morning (Jan 14), damaging a lamp post and 2 cars.

There were no reported injuries in the incident, which took place at a carpark across special needs school Rainbow Centre.

Photos online showed the exposed roots of the fallen tree. A toppled lamp post was spotted nearby.

Two cars damaged by fallen tree near Dawson

2 cars were damaged after an 8m-tall rain tree and a lamp post fell on them on Sunday (Jan 14) morning.

The incident happened at an open-air car park along Margaret Drive, beside SkyVille @ Dawson.

The windscreen of a white BMW was badly shattered, & a silver Nissan had a big dent on its roof. No injuries were reported.

Tree falls on Toa Payoh road, 2 people taken to hospital

A tree along Lorong 6 Toa Payoh fell onto the road on Monday morning (Jan 8).

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said 2 people were taken conscious to Tan Tock Seng Hospital after it responded to an ambulance call at 10am.

A photo circulating online showed the tree sprawled across the 2-lane road, the road divider and on a white lorry near a traffic junction.

Another tree uprooted in Yishun, this time falling on multiple vehicles

A tree uprooted and fell on a row of parked cars at Block 752 Yishun Street 72 today (Jan 12) at around 1.07am.

Stomper D took photos of the tree and shared them with Stomp.

Thankfully, he said that the cars did not look to be badly damaged.

A massive tree fell on a playground in front of Block 147 Yishun Street 11 today (Jan 11) at around 12.45am.

Uprooted tree falls on 2 cars at Bukit Batok carpark on New Year's Day

A large tree came tumbling down, crushing two cars beneath its trunk on Monday (Jan 1) at around 9am.

The incident happened at a carpark in front Block 211, Bukit Batok Street 21.

Tree uprooted after truck crashes into it at Woodlands Avenue 5

A cement truck caused a tree at Woodlands Avenue 5 to be uprooted after crashing into it earlier today (Dec 15).

Stomper Tony noticed the scene at around 11am and said the accident occurred near the main entrance of the Seagate factory.

Responding to media queries by Stomp, the police said they were alerted to the accident, which took place in the direction of Woodlands Avenue 12, at 10.26am.

Fallen tree at Dunearn Road forces road closure

A stretch of Dunearn Road in the Bukit Timah area was closed on Friday (Nov 10) due to a fallen tree.

At about 8.35pm, police received a call requesting for assistance along Dunearn Road towards the city where the tree had fallen.

The Land Transport Authority announced on Twitter at 8.50pm that there was an obstacle on Dunearn Road towards the city, after Eng Neo Avenue.

Strong winds amid a thunderstorm toppled a large tree along Geylang East Central on Tuesday morning (Nov 14), causing bus services to be diverted.

Channel NewsAsia reader Loi Ling Ling said Geylang Methodist Primary School, which her son attends, notified parents at about 6.45am that a tree had fallen near the school.

She added that she saw the "huge" tree while sending her son to school at about 07:15am.

A tall tree fell at Upper Jurong Road on Saturday (April 15), damaging a covered walkway near the Singapore Discovery Centre.

Photos sent to Stomp showed that the tree fell across a bus bay and a 3-lane road, blocking it entirely.

It appears to have uprooted & toppled, tearing through the roof of the sheltered walkway near the bus stop.

A heavy downpour on Tuesday (Nov 14) morning caused a tree to fall near Geylang Polyclinic, leading to a traffic jam.

The tree took a lamp post down with it. Straits Times photojournalist Jamie Koh was passing by the spot at about 6.45am, when she came across the scene.

The incident, which occurred in the direction of Sims Avenue, affected traffic, with the right-most lane passable only to cars.

Large tree branch falls on Lower Delta Road, causes hour-long road closure

A massive fallen tree branch blocked traffic on two lanes of Lower Delta Road on Wed afternoon (Nov 22), causing an hour-long closure for traffic along one direction of the road.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said there were no injuries.

An SCDF spokesman told The Straits Times it was alerted to the incident at 2:17pm, & dispatched an ambulance to the scene. However, no medical help was required.

Incidents of fallen trees and branches at their lowest since 2001: NParks

Despite online chatter, which suggests the opposite, incidents of falling trees and branches have dropped to their lowest level since recording began 16 years ago.

Though at least 5 cases of toppled trees and falling branches were fingered for causing traffic jams and damaging vehicles last month (November), the 361 incidents reported this year is a decline of more than 85 per cent from 3,000 in 2001, the National Parks Board (NParks) said.

The number is also less than half of the 800 recorded last year, and involved mostly snapped branches, rather than uprooted trees, NParks added.

Mother nature unleashes her fury at East Coast Park, leaving several uprooted trees in her wake

Stomper Jim was met with an awesome sight when he went for his morning jog at East Coast Beach this morning.

A storm last night had uprooted a number of trees between East Coast Chalet and Fort Road.

Many of the trees that were uprooted were huge and blocked pathways that park visitors had to navigate around.

Hailstones, Flash Floods & Fallen Trees as Storms hit Singapore

After a span of heavy rainfall on Tuesday evening, hailstones have been reported in several areas of Singapore such as Yishun and Seletar. In addition to this, flash floods have been reported at Seletar North Link.

A Facebook user, who goes by the name of Mygolf Sg, posted an amazing video of hailstones during the rainfall at Seletar Country Club. A few other users also posted hail stone videos in other parts of Singapore, including Nanyang Polytechnic.

Experts say that hailstorms form within an unusually unstable air mass in which the temperature falloff with height is much greater than normal. During hailstorms, small ice particles that form above the freezing level generally collect either rainwater or cloud water on them, forming a water shell that freezes.

TREE OF DEATH

A 5-year-old Spanish boy has tragically died, about a week after a falling tree struck him along Bukit Timah Road, Lianhe Zaobao reported.

The incident itself happened on August 17 around 4pm, resulting in life-threatening injuries for the boy, who was rushed to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for treatment.

A Facebook post by a friend in church asked family members and friends to pray for his recovery, but he succumbed to his injuries last Friday (Aug 25). Stomp reported that the boy’s father is working in Singapore and had moved his family here.

Fallen trees as heavy rain batters Singapore

Heavy rain caused a tree to fall on an SMRT bus at a bus stop in front of Block 203, Commonwealth Avenue West yesterday (Oct 7).

Stomper Angela came across the scene at around 5.15pm and sent in photos.

"When I reached, there were no more passengers on board and only one driver seated in the bus. You can see him if you zoom in on one of the the pictures."

More than 100 trees uprooted over the weekend

More than 100 trees in total were uprooted over the weekend because of stormy weather and exceptionally strong localised winds.

The National Parks Boards (NParks) told the media that 13 trees were Sunday uprooted near the tracks at Changi Beach Park while another 100 were discovered to have fallen within the park itself.

Heavy rains had also saturated and softened the soil in the area. A total of 10 more trees in other parts or S'pore were also affected by the strong winds.
