Singapore gazettes Padang as a national monument on National Day

The Padang - a site of countless historic events in Singapore's history - will officially be gazetted as the nation's 75th national monument on Tuesday (Aug 9), the 57th anniversary of the Republic's independence.

On Monday, Minister for Culture, Community and Youth Edwin Tong said that while the site has no physical structures, its open space is the site of many shared memories as a nation.

The gazette protects the site from alteration and change that would affect its character and significance, while allowing it to continue to be a social and community space enjoyed by Singaporeans, he added.

Fireworks lit the night sky and the National Anthem rang loud as thousands gathered in Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park on Saturday evening (Aug 6) to kick off the nation's 57th birthday bash a few days early.

The carnival atmosphere was palpable, with residents young and old enjoying the day out, participating in activities such as arts and crafts workshops and games of ring toss.

Around 20,000 people turned up for the ticketed event at the park, which kicked off at 4pm and ended at 9pm.

The hot weather on Sunday afternoon (Aug 7) did not deter 80-year-old Hasiah Molan and her friend from visiting a National Day carnival where veteran singer Rahimah Rahim was performing.

"We also came for the other things at the carnival, but especially for (the singer)," said her friend, who wished to be known as Madam Ramlah and is in her 70s.

Madam Ramlah also said they were glad to be at the carnival, held at Wisma Geylang Serai, after spending most of the past two years being cooped up at home due to Covid-19 restrictions.
