Singapore lands on list of 32 most exciting cities in the world

At 31st spot

Would you say Singapore is an exciting place? Sort of? Maybe? Welp, our garden city made it on the list of the 32 most exciting cities across the globe, according to this year’s Time Out City Life Index — but we pretty much had to be included, because the poll quizzed some of the cities that Time Out is published in.

So yes, Time Out was basically forced to put Singapore in the index, and the city-state probably wouldn’t even be in it if they had their way.

Anyway, after surveying 15,000 people all over the world about their cities, the lifestyle publication pronounced our Little Red Dot as the 31st most exciting city to live in and visit in 2018. Eh, not so great.

Singapore is second to last in Time Out survey of most exciting cities

Singapore has emerged as the 31st most exciting city in the world out of a survey of 15,000 people in 32 cities by British travel magazine Time Out.

“The city-state of Singapore was the worst rated city we surveyed for culture, and the worst for drinking apart from Dubai. But it scored well for safety and public transport, and it has a much buzzier restaurant scene than other cities towards the bottom of the ranking,” Time Out said.

According to the Time Out City Life Index 2018, which was done in collaboration with Tapestry Research, Chicago was crowned the most exciting city in the world. This is thanks to its “outstanding food and bar scene”, while the city also scores above average when it comes to “happiness, culture, affordability, city pride and how people feel about their neighbourhood”.

STB throws shade at Time Out survey calling Singapore boring

Singapore Tourism Board (STB) has taken a swipe at Time Out’s recent survey which singled out Singapore as a “boring” country compared to others in the survey. Singapore was ranked 31 out of 32 for its “most exciting cities” survey.

In a Facebook video, STB took various statements from the findings of the survey which referred to Singapore as boring and intertwined it with clips showcasing the opposite of that statement.

These statements include “Boring”, “There is nothing exciting to do”, “Nightlife is underwhelming”, “Everything is concrete”, “There is no art and culture” and “Everything is so expensive”, ending off with a passive aggressive line, “Could we be anymore boring?”. The caption of the video even tagged Time Out London

Singapore, which has tried to shed its straitlaced image in the past decade or so through the hosting of the Formula 1 Grand Prix & building of the integrated resorts, for example, has been ranked one of the least exciting cities in the world, according to an online survey by an international travel magazine.

The Republic came in 2nd last — ahead of Istanbul — out of 32 cities in the Time Out City Life Index, which quizzed 15,000 people living in these places on criteria such as food, drink, culture, friendliness, affordability, happiness and liveability.

The online survey was conducted by Time Out in collaboration with Tapestry Research over December last year & January, and involved respondents aged 18 years old and above. Among other things, respondents were asked how they feel about their neighbourhood, how many hours they work, when was the last time they went to a restaurant, and whether they enjoyed living in their cities.

Singapore is one of the least exciting among 32 cities from around the world, according to Time Out’s City Life Index 2018 which was published on Tuesday (Jan 31).

Singapore came in at 31 in the anonymous survey of 15,000 urbanites across the 32 cities which takes into account criteria such as culture, food, drink, friendliness, liveability, affordability & happiness.

Time Out pronounced Singapore as “the worst rated city” for culture, & the worst for drinking apart from Dubai. However, Singapore’s final score of 98.7 points was bolstered by its good ratings for safety & public transport and its “much buzzier restaurant scene” compared to other cities towards the bottom of the ranking.

Don’t need a survey to judge if Singapore is exciting

Singaporeans do not like to be told that we bombed in a test of any sort.

So it’s no surprise that news on Wednesday (Jan 31) that Singapore is seen as one of the least exciting among 32 cities in Time Out’s 2018 City Life Index stirred up a storm on social media.

Netizens rushed to defend Singapore’s reputation, with many highlighting how Singapore has become more interesting over the years with events like the Formula 1 Grand Prix.
