World Toilet Day 2023

World Toilet Day: Theme, History, Significance and All You Need to Know

City and town folk cannot imagine a life without permanent toilets. 3.6 billion people living in the world today, however, don’t have access to a proper toilet. Compromised sanitation can wreak havoc across communities by contamination of our food and water and the spread of serious diseases that take lives. World Toilet Day is observed on November 19 every year, to bring awareness about the importance of toilets and sanitation in our lives.

World Toilet Day was an initiative of a certain Jack Sim from Singapore, who founded the World Toilet organisation NGO in the year 2001. It was his idea to use the day to raise awareness about the importance of sanitation and hygiene. This initiative was backed by the Sustainable Sanitation Alliance (SuSanA). In 2010, the UN recognised the Human Right to Water and Sanitation (HRWS) as a fundamental human right.

It was in the year 2013, on July 24 that the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in its 67th session passed a resolution by which it designated November 19 as World toilet Day.

Singapore's first UN resolution adopted; now, every Nov 19 is World Toilet Day

The United Nations (UN) has agreed to mark World Toilet Day on Nov 19, thanks to a Singapore initiative.

Singapore had tabled the resolution, Sanitation for All, to raise awareness of the global challenge of sanitation and toilets.

It is the first time Singapore, since it became a UN member 48 years ago, had put a resolution before the UN's General Assembly of 193 members. The resolution was supported by 120 countries, said the the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources in a joint statement on Wednesday.

World Toilet Day

World Toilet Day (WTD) is an official United Nations international observance day on 19 November to inspire action to tackle the global sanitation crisis. Worldwide, 4.2 billion people live without "safely managed sanitation" and around 673 million people practice open defecation.  Sustainable Development Goal 6 aims to "Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all". In particular, target 6.2 is to "End open defecation and provide access to sanitation and hygiene". When the Sustainable Development Goals Report 2020 was published, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres said, "Today, Sustainable Development Goal 6 is badly off track" and it "is hindering progress on the 2030 Agenda, the realization of human rights and the achievement of peace and security around the world".

World Toilet Day exists to inform, engage and inspire people to take action toward achieving this goal. The UN General Assembly declared World Toilet Day an official UN day in 2013, after Singapore had tabled the resolution (its first resolution before the UN's General Assembly of 193 member states). Prior to that, World Toilet Day had been established unofficially by the World Toilet Organization (a Singapore-based NGO) in 2001. UN-Water is the official convener of World Toilet Day. UN-Water maintains the official World Toilet Day website and chooses a special theme for each year. In 2020 the theme was "Sustainable sanitation and climate change". In 2019 the theme was 'Leaving no one behind', which is the central theme of the Sustainable Development Goals. Themes in previous years include nature-based solutions, wastewater, toilets and jobs, and toilets and nutrition. World Toilet Day is marked by communications campaigns and other activities. Events are planned by UN entities, international organizations, local civil society organizations and volunteers to raise awareness and inspire action.

Toilets are important because access to a safe functioning toilet has a positive impact on public health, human dignity, and personal safety, especially for females. Sanitation systems that do not safely treat excreta (feces) allow the spread of disease.Serious soil-transmitted diseases and waterborne diseases such as cholera, diarrhea, typhoid, dysentery and schistosomiasis can result.

Clean Public Toilets Campaign 2023

As a cleaner, Ms Li Xiu Mei, 56, is often greeted by the pungent stench of human waste left overnight when she reports for duty in the morning. She has also mopped up trails of faecal matter that have hardened on the toilet floor, unclogged toilets choked with waste left unflushed overnight, and scraped off lumps of toilet paper stuck on the walls by naughty youngsters.

“Some users wash up inside and leave footprints everywhere, and sometimes the toilets are choked with toilet paper,” said Ms Li, an employee at One Punggol Hawker Centre, in Mandarin. “Each toilet normally takes around 10 minutes to clean, but these kinds of mess will take us anywhere up to an hour to clean.” It seems Singapore still has some way to go to making it a habit to keep public lavatories clean – an issue the National Environment Agency (NEA) aims to re-emphasise in the latest edition of its Clean Public Toilets campaign. The campaign, which is in its fifth run, was started in 2018.

The 2023 campaign urges the public to be responsible, even when no one is around, and to make sure the floor and toilet seats are dry, as well as to use the flush. Titled “Are you nice when no one’s around? Do it right for everyone”, the campaign is backed by the Public Hygiene Council, the Singapore Kindness Movement (SKM) and the Restroom Association (Singapore).

Historic change in 2023 Miss Universe beauty pageant rules. Mothers, wives can now compete

Miss Universe beauty pageant will allow mothers and married women to participate in the spectacle from 2023. In a recent memo, it stated that all women should be in control of their lives, and their personal decisions should not be a reason or a barrier to their success.

Miss Universe beauty pageant 2023, will undergo historic changes as it is set to include mothers and married women in the contest. The 72nd Miss Universe will mark this change. The pageant only allowed unmarried women and women with no children in the age bracket of 18 to 28 to participate until now. The expectation from the winners was not to bear children and stay unmarried till the Miss Universe title was with them.

The internal memo stated that a woman's personal decisions should not hinder her success. Hence, they welcome the move. Miss Universe 2020, Andrea Meza commended the change and said she was delighted to hear this was happening. She added that society is changing, and women now hold positions of significance. It was time that beauty pageants changed some rules to accommodate women who have families.

Miss Universe to welcomes moms and wives in its 72nd edition in 2023

Miss Universe declares moms and wives aged 18 to 28 eligible to compete starting on its 72nd edition which will take place next year.

Miss Universe organization president Paula Shugart has confirmed the news of the pageant's inclusion of moms and wives in the competition. Shugart appeared in an interview with ANC and talked about the changes that the competition will go through starting with the 72nd edition.

In the decades-long history of Miss Universe, the organization has only allowed single women, aged between 18 and 28, who “must not have ever been married, not had a marriage annulled, nor given birth to, or parented a child” to compete. The inclusion of moms and wives will take place provided that the contestants must still fall within the 18 to 28 age bracket.

Miss Universe 2023: Meet the two transgender participants whose win can make history
Miss Portugal, Marina Machete and Miss Netherlands, Rikkie Kolle, marking their first time transwomen participation in the competition

The 72nd Miss Universe pageant has arrived and is taking place in El Salvador (Sunday morning in India), where 84 women are competing for the coveted title and to celebrate diversity and beauty beyond boundaries. Miss Universe 2023 paves the way for transgender inclusion in the global pageantry with the inclusion of Miss Portugal, Marina Machete and Miss Netherlands, Rikkie Kolle, marking their first time transwomen participation in the competition. If either Machete or Kolle win, they will create history by becoming the first transwoman contestant to wear the Miss Universe crown.

Flight attendant Marina Machete won the 2023 Miss Portugal competition in October, making her the first transgender contestant to do so in her country and her bio reads, “I'm most proud of the challenges I overcame with courage and strength. Leading me to develop humanity and kindness towards others in my life.” In a video posted on Portuguese pageant’s YouTube channel, she had shared, “As a trans woman I’ve been through many obstacles along the way but fortunately and especially with my family, love proved to be stronger than ignorance.” Both these participants now use their social media platforms to share messages of encouragement to trans people around the world.

Rikkie Kollé is a 22-year-old model and LGBTQIA+ rights activist who beat nine other finalists to be crowned Miss Netherlands in July this year and became the second transgender person to compete in the Miss Universe pageant, following Angela Ponce, who represented Spain in 2018. Kollé is a model who competed on “Holland's Next Top Model” and earlier in a video shared for the Voices for Change campaign, she advocated for equality and is against bullying since she reportedly faced it due to her gender identity. Before becoming Miss Netherlands, Kollé had highlighted the struggles she faced as a transgender in her life and said in a video, “Miss Universe asked us to describe ourselves in one word .The word I’m choosing is ‘victory,’ because as a little boy I conquered all the things that came through my path — and look at me now, standing here as a strong, empowering and confident trans woman.”

Owners of Miss Universe file for bankruptcy
Ms Jakrajutatip has been outspoken about her experiences as a transgender woman

The Thai owner of the Miss Universe pageant, which was once part of former US president Donald Trump's business empire, has filed for bankruptcy a year after buying it for $20m (£16.4m). JKN Global Group has said it would try to resolve a "liquidity problem".

Its chief executive, Anne Jakapong Jakrajutatip, is a transgender woman who bought the firm as the pageant became more inclusive. But the firm has loaded up on debt which it is seeking to restructure. "The company can continue its operation while being under the rehabilitation plan," JKN said. Funding for the deal was raised through bonds but the firm missed a repayment deadline of around $12m which was due on 1 September. In the past year, JKN's share price has fallen by more than 80%.

The Thai Bankruptcy Court has set the hearing date for the petition for business rehabilitation on 29 January 2024, according to the firm. Under the ownership of JKN, the pageant has allowed mothers and married women to participate in the contest from this year. The revised format will also feature at least two trans women for the first time after Marina Machete became the first transgender woman to win Miss Portugal and Rikkie Valerie Kolle was crowned Miss Netherlands in July. The annual Miss Universe pageant, with a history spanning seven decades, is broadcast in more than 165 countries. The Miss Universe Organization was co-owned by Mr Trump from 1996 to 2015.
