Historic change in 2023 Miss Universe beauty pageant rules. Mothers, wives can now compete
Miss Universe beauty pageant will allow mothers and married women to participate in the spectacle from 2023. In a recent memo, it stated that all women should be in control of their lives, and their personal decisions should not be a reason or a barrier to their success.
Miss Universe beauty pageant 2023, will undergo historic changes as it is set to include mothers and married women in the contest. The 72nd Miss Universe will mark this change. The pageant only allowed unmarried women and women with no children in the age bracket of 18 to 28 to participate until now. The expectation from the winners was not to bear children and stay unmarried till the Miss Universe title was with them.
The internal memo stated that a woman's personal decisions should not hinder her success. Hence, they welcome the move. Miss Universe 2020, Andrea Meza commended the change and said she was delighted to hear this was happening. She added that society is changing, and women now hold positions of significance. It was time that beauty pageants changed some rules to accommodate women who have families.
Miss Universe to welcomes moms and wives in its 72nd edition in 2023
Miss Universe declares moms and wives aged 18 to 28 eligible to compete starting on its 72nd edition which will take place next year.
Miss Universe organization president Paula Shugart has confirmed the news of the pageant's inclusion of moms and wives in the competition. Shugart appeared in an interview with ANC and talked about the changes that the competition will go through starting with the 72nd edition.
In the decades-long history of Miss Universe, the organization has only allowed single women, aged between 18 and 28, who “must not have ever been married, not had a marriage annulled, nor given birth to, or parented a child” to compete. The inclusion of moms and wives will take place provided that the contestants must still fall within the 18 to 28 age bracket.
Miss Universe 2023: Meet the two transgender participants whose win can make history
Miss Portugal, Marina Machete and Miss Netherlands, Rikkie Kolle, marking their first time transwomen participation in the competition
The 72nd Miss Universe pageant has arrived and is taking place in El Salvador (Sunday morning in India), where 84 women are competing for the coveted title and to celebrate diversity and beauty beyond boundaries. Miss Universe 2023 paves the way for transgender inclusion in the global pageantry with the inclusion of Miss Portugal, Marina Machete and Miss Netherlands, Rikkie Kolle, marking their first time transwomen participation in the competition. If either Machete or Kolle win, they will create history by becoming the first transwoman contestant to wear the Miss Universe crown.
Flight attendant Marina Machete won the 2023 Miss Portugal competition in October, making her the first transgender contestant to do so in her country and her bio reads, “I'm most proud of the challenges I overcame with courage and strength. Leading me to develop humanity and kindness towards others in my life.” In a video posted on Portuguese pageant’s YouTube channel, she had shared, “As a trans woman I’ve been through many obstacles along the way but fortunately and especially with my family, love proved to be stronger than ignorance.” Both these participants now use their social media platforms to share messages of encouragement to trans people around the world.
Rikkie Kollé is a 22-year-old model and LGBTQIA+ rights activist who beat nine other finalists to be crowned Miss Netherlands in July this year and became the second transgender person to compete in the Miss Universe pageant, following Angela Ponce, who represented Spain in 2018. Kollé is a model who competed on “Holland's Next Top Model” and earlier in a video shared for the Voices for Change campaign, she advocated for equality and is against bullying since she reportedly faced it due to her gender identity. Before becoming Miss Netherlands, Kollé had highlighted the struggles she faced as a transgender in her life and said in a video, “Miss Universe asked us to describe ourselves in one word .The word I’m choosing is ‘victory,’ because as a little boy I conquered all the things that came through my path — and look at me now, standing here as a strong, empowering and confident trans woman.”

Owners of Miss Universe file for bankruptcy
Ms Jakrajutatip has been outspoken about her experiences as a transgender woman
The Thai owner of the Miss Universe pageant, which was once part of former US president Donald Trump's business empire, has filed for bankruptcy a year after buying it for $20m (£16.4m). JKN Global Group has said it would try to resolve a "liquidity problem".
Its chief executive, Anne Jakapong Jakrajutatip, is a transgender woman who bought the firm as the pageant became more inclusive. But the firm has loaded up on debt which it is seeking to restructure. "The company can continue its operation while being under the rehabilitation plan," JKN said. Funding for the deal was raised through bonds but the firm missed a repayment deadline of around $12m which was due on 1 September. In the past year, JKN's share price has fallen by more than 80%.
The Thai Bankruptcy Court has set the hearing date for the petition for business rehabilitation on 29 January 2024, according to the firm. Under the ownership of JKN, the pageant has allowed mothers and married women to participate in the contest from this year. The revised format will also feature at least two trans women for the first time after Marina Machete became the first transgender woman to win Miss Portugal and Rikkie Valerie Kolle was crowned Miss Netherlands in July. The annual Miss Universe pageant, with a history spanning seven decades, is broadcast in more than 165 countries. The Miss Universe Organization was co-owned by Mr Trump from 1996 to 2015.
