These 13 countries are not as rich as you think they are


While some countries look wealthy from the outside, scratch beneath the surface and their economic reality is actually very different.

Using the World Bank's most recent GDP-per-capita figures, which quantify each country's economic output per person and so better reflect the population's wealth, read on as we look at 13 countries that aren't as rich as you might think. All dollar amounts in US dollars unless otherwise stated:
  • Nigeria, GDP per capita: $2,066 (£1,667)
  • India, GDP per capita: $2,257 (£1,821)
  • Iran, GDP per capita: $4,091 (£3,301)
  • Indonesia, GDP per capita: $4,333 (£3,497)
  • Ukraine, GDP per capita: $4,836 (£3,903)
  • South Africa, GDP per capita: $7,055 (£5,693)
  • Brazil, GDP per capita: $7,507 (£6,055)
  • Mexico, GDP per capita: $10,046 (£8,098)
  • Maldives, GDP per capita: $10,366 (£8,361)
  • Kazakhstan, GDP per capita: $10,374 (£8,368)
  • Russia, GDP per capita: $12,195 (£9,836)
  • China, GDP per capita: $12,556 (£10,130)
