Happy Grandparents' Day 2016

Every year all grandmother and grandfathers in Singapore celebrate Grandparents' Day on the fourth Sunday in November. This is a jolly holiday, that has a long history in Singapore.

Grandparents' Day was officially established in Singapore in 1998, and the first celebration took place only in 1999. Singaporean grandparents have to thank Jay Lim for his initiative, and his grandmother Lee Su Lan, who inspired him to establish the holiday in her honor.

Lee Su Lan died at the age of 103. She witnessed horrible events of World War II and Japanese occupation of Singapore. She escaped from the Japanese soldiers and lived miserable 4 years growing sweet potatoes, but she managed to survive, raise 5 children and celebrate the birth of 22 grandchildren, over 30 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

Celebration of Grandparents' Day highlights the important role that grandparents play in every Singaporean family. They contribute to upbringing of the children, who today have to appreciate their efforts. This event also celebrates the strong bonds between multiple generations of one family.
