The website of Canada’s immigration ministry crashed as many Americans sought to emigrate to their northern neighbour to escape a Donald Trump presidency.

Access to the site became progressively more difficult during Tuesday evening as the Republican candidate picked up key states essential to winning the White House over Democrat Hillary Clinton.

The site displayed an error message at 11pm on Tuesday when the swing state of Florida went to Trump, a major step toward the 270 electoral votes he needed to succeed President Barack Obama.

Hollywood celebrities and recording stars in shock over Donald Trump win

There was misery for Hillary Clinton's band of Hollywood megafans as Donald Trump emerged victorious.

Many of them, including Lena Dunham, Miley Cyrus and Amy Schumer, have said they will leave the United States if Trump was elected.

Take heart, Canada! Don’t let the dour faces on American television, journalist Twitter, and our own CBC get you down. They might all be miserably contemplating the next four years under the ethically challenged but transformational Donald Trump, instead of the ethically challenged establishment-entrenched Hillary Clinton they clearly hoped would win. Tuesday might have delivered a huge loss to the political class, intellectual class and left-leaning media. But, economically speaking anyway, Donald Trump’s victory is looking like a big win for Canada.

To be sure, we can’t be entirely certain — the NAFTA question looms large. But here’s one thing we can be sure of: A Clinton win virtually guaranteed that one big loser in the 2016 election would have been us.

It’s still impossible to tell which of Trump’s often-wild promises he will actually keep, given how unpredictable he has demonstrated himself to be. But the risk with Clinton was always the opposite. It was her political determination. Had she been allowed to govern as she was resolved to, Canada would have paid the price for as long as eight more difficult years — probably more than they will under even a loose-cannon amateur like Trump. A president Hillary Clinton would have implemented policies that would have been sure to drag down the economic growth of an economy upon which Canada overwhelmingly relies for its own.

Trump-fleeing Americans crash Canadian migration website

Some Americans joked about crossing the border to Canada if Donald Trump became the president, but it is not a joke anymore.

"Citizenship and Immigration Canada," the country's immigration website, crashed with high traffic volumes at 10:30 p.m. Tuesday (local time) as Americans who feared a Trump win rushed the site to seek an exit to Canada.

Twitter lit up in the U.S. with news of the crash and the error message. Netizens on Facebook also shared the news.

At the beginning of the primary season, Donald Trump was the last on my list. I knew this election would be crucial because the Democrat politicians were determined to merge America into the socialism of Europe, subjugating our national sovereignty to “greater globalism.

Trump’s bluster and the harsh words in the primary gave me doubts. Sealing our borders was appealing, but demanding that Mexico pay for a wall seemed unreasonable. Yet, Trump had a groundswell of support.

Over time, I realized millions of angry voters want jobs, opportunity, and honesty. Washington increasingly has regulated their every action, raised taxes, and increased the National Debt, yet failed to protect them from lawlessness or terrorism. They are sick of Washington insiders getting fat and rich at the expense of ordinary Americans. They see a dimmer, poorer future for our children.
