Swearing-in of Singapore's fourth Prime Minister Lawrence Wong
Mr Lawrence Wong was sworn in as Singapore's fourth Prime Minister on Wednesday (May 15), replacing Mr Lee Hsien Loong.
The swearing-in at the Istana took place just after 8pm, with more than 800 guests attending the ceremony. They include Cabinet ministers, members of parliament, frontline healthcare and transport workers, religious and business leaders, teachers and students, among others.
The ceremony began with a speech by President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, followed by the swearing-in of the new Prime Minister and members of his Cabinet. In his first remarks as Prime Minister, Mr Wong said: “We will lead in our own way. We will continue to think boldly and to think far. We know that there is still much more to do … and the best chapters of our Singapore Story lie ahead.”

Lawrence Wong was sworn in as Singapore’s fourth Prime Minister on Wednesday (May 15), marking the country’s first leadership transition in 20 years.
Mr Wong, 51, is the first Singapore Prime Minister born after the country’s independence in 1965.
Speaking after he and his Cabinet were sworn in at the Istana, Mr Wong said his team will "lead in our own way" and with a style different from previous generations.

Wong was born on 18 December 1972, in the eastern part of Singapore. Growing up, Wong and his family lived in a public Housing and Development Board (HDB) flat in Marine Parade. Wong's Hainanese father worked as a sales executive while his mother was a teacher at his primary school. As a child, his father gave him a guitar and he developed a love for music.
Wong attended Haig Boys' Primary School (now Tanjong Katong Primary School), Tanjong Katong Technical School (now Tanjong Katong Secondary School), and Victoria Junior College before going to college.

Loo Tze Lui (born 1974) is a former investment banker, best known as Prime Minister Lawrence Wong’s wife. She is currently an Investment Manager of a Single Family Office and has been reported to be active as a Vice President of real estate investment house, Pacific Star Group, as well as an individual private investor. She has also previously sat on the Board of Directors of YMCA for 8 years, before stepping down in2024.
Overall, not much is known about Loo Tze Lui’s personal life and she is known to keep a low profile. Although she has appeared alongside PM Wong on state visits and events, she made her first official public appearance during President Tharman’s inauguration in 2023. In 1993, Loo Tze Lui graduated from the University of South California with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. Loo specialized in finance.
