FULL MOON FOR MAY 7, 2020
May’s full Moon rises on Thursday, May 7! This full Moon will be the last of the three supermoons to occur this year, so don’t miss it! Here’s everything you should know about this month’s full moon, including how it got its name, “The Full Flower Moon.”
May’s full Flower Moon reaches peak illumination at 6:45 A.M. (EDT) on Thursday, May 7. It will be below the horizon at this time, so plan to venture outdoors the night before (Wednesday, May 6) or on Thursday night to get the best view of the bright full Flower Moon! Find out what time the Moon will be visible in your area with our Moonrise and Moonset Calculator. This year, we’ve been enjoying a series of spring supermoons, which began with March’s Worm Moon, culminated in April’s Pink Moon, and will finish with May’s Flower Moon on May 7.
When the full Moon appears this month, it will be ever-so-slightly farther away than it was in April and March. May’s full Moon still qualifies as a supermoon, but it won’t be as bright or as big as the others in the series, technically speaking. However, the difference in distance between its orbit and April’s—about 2500 miles—is not much in the grand scale of space, so you will still see a bright, beautiful supermoon! On average, supermoons are about 7% bigger and about 15% brighter than a typical full Moon.

'Super flower moon' will happen on May 7, will be last supermoon of 2020
The moon will look bigger and brighter
If you missed April's pink supermoon, the largest supermoon of 2020, fret not. Another supermoon will be occurring on May 7, and it will be the last supermoon of the year. Thursday's full supermoon has also been dubbed a "super flower moon", and contrary to its name, will not entail any sort of resemblance to flowers.
Instead, it was so named as it appears during spring season when flowers are blooming, according to BBC's science magazine Science Focus. May's supermoon has also gone by other names, such as "corn planting moon", "milk moon" and the "Vesak Festival moon", the latter name arising as it is concurrent with Vesak Day.
A full or new moon is called a supermoon when it coincides with the point of orbit at which they are closest to Earth. Supermoons can be up to 14 per cent larger and 30 per cent brighter than a regular full moon, reported CNET. NASA stated that the supermoon will appear on May 7 at around 6:45am EDT, which is around 6:45pm in Singapore. The moon will also appear full for around three days this time around till Friday, so you can start dusting off your binoculars tonight.

Pink supermoon, largest supermoon of 2020 happening on April 8, 2020
This is said to be the second of three supermoons this year, with the first one in March and the third one is expected to happen in May. But you probably wouldn't want to miss the supermoon.
As it is closer to Earth than the other two supermoons, it is said to be the largest supermoon this year. On average, supermoons are about seven per cent bigger and about 15 per cent brighter than a typical full moon.
This upcoming supermoon is also called the "Pink Supermoon". However, it's not because the moon will take on a pink hue. A full moon in April is called a "Pink Moon" as it is named after a pink flower called the ground phlox that also blooms in April.

A super 'pink moon' will light up the Singapore sky
Get your telescopes out – the Singapore sky is about to be streaked with glowy orange hues (perfect for that golden hour selfie) as a full pink moon emerges through the clouds around Wednesday morning at 10.35am. The moon isn't exactly bathed in the rosy shade but its position in the sky gives it a pinkish tint. This marks the third supermoon this year and it's set to be the biggest and brightest one as the perigee – the moon's elliptical orbit – comes closest to the earth, especially during sunrise and sunset.
What makes the moon super? While it doesn't bring any special powers like giving us clear skin, it appears 14% bigger and 30% brighter than the average moon. It also has made appearances in 1955, 1974, 1992 and 2005. While it's hypnotically beautiful to stare at, it has a bad rep amongst the superstitious – it's often associated with natural disasters such as tsunamis and earthquakes.
The full moon will peak during around 10.35am on April 8, while stargazers in the US will experience it in the late hours of Tuesday and Europe in the early hours of Wednesday. The supermoon usually lasts for only 20 minutes, so try your best to not blink an eye as you'll have to wait until the moonset time or until May 7 for the final supermoon.

APRIL 7 IS NEAREST PERIGEE FULL MOON OF YEAR
APRIL "PINK" SUPERMOON: BRIGHTEST OF 2020
This year, the nearest (and, thus biggest and brighest) supermoon of the year rises on April 7–8. This is 2020 supermoon season with three in a row, in March, April, and May. How big or bright will the Moon appear? What is a supermoon? And why don’t we use this term in The Old Farmer’s Almanac? Here are more helpful facts from Bob Berman.
On Tuesday, April 7, at 10:35 EDT, we mark the full Moon of April. It’s the nearest (and, thus, biggest and brightest) supermoon of the year!
Based on a longtime Almanac tradition, we give each lunar month a nickname and April’s Moon is called the “Pink Moon.” No, it’s not because it will turn pink (though a Moon low in the sky will look pinkish). The name speaks to wildflowers called creeping phlox, ground phlox, or moss pink, one of the early spring flowers which blooms at this time.
