The national ideals represented by our flag—democracy, peace, progress, justice and equality—cut across political, racial and religious boundaries. I believe we would all do well to reflect a bit more on all of these ideals (not just the second and third one), especially in the area of policymaking.

Handle the flag with care and respect, or else
(Photo/ inSing News)
The nation’s independence day is right around the corner and one of the few things residents do ahead of the big day is to hang out the state flag with much pride, and no prejudice.
But be careful when and how you handle the red and white fabric because the wrong move could cost you $1,000.
Drop it, dirty it, hang it the wrong way, disfigure it, tear it, burn it – you catch my drift – basically disrespecting the flag would get you classed as an offender.
Clearly one 13-year-old girl didn’t know about the flag laws when she set fire to one at a pavilion at Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1 on 17 July.

The flag flies…
The hanging of flags in HDB estates is a practice that started in the 1980s. When it first began, the response was robust. You have almost every unit of HDB putting up their flags, voluntarily. If patriotism is measured by this spontaneous act, the index scores well.
In recent years, the number of flags hang had dwindled. A walk down through couple of neighbouring HDB estate showed a dearth in the display.
Can we naturally attribute this citizenry reluctance to their angst at the host of unpopular government policies that had caused deep resentment and widespread unhappiness?

Controversial N-flag trunks worn by water polo team inappropriate, says Govt
The design of the swimming trunks worn by Singapore's water polo team at the Asian Games has been ruled 'inappropriate' by the government. The team did not seek official advice or approval for the design.
The team, however, will still get to wear the trunks for at least one more match, as competition rules require the players to wear one colour of trunks throughout the competition.
Ms Carol Tan, director of Mica's resilience and marketing division, said: "We would have told them that their design is inappropriate as we want elements of the flag to be treated with dignity. This is because many Singaporeans recognise these elements as representing the Singapore flag."
