Dongzhi 冬至 (Winter Solstice Festival) 2015

Five things you might not have known about the Winter Solstice

The Winter or December Solstice takes place here today, 22 Dec 2014, and is known as the longest night of the year, but that really depends on which part of the world you're in.

The longest night for the northern hemisphere is also the longest day - and peak of summer - for the southern hemisphere.

Here are some things to know about the Winter Solstice:
  • From space: It's all about the tilt
  • Back on Earth: Less sun, longer nights
  • But Singapore is on the Equator, so is there really a lot of difference?
  • Doesn't really matter, we still celebrate it
  • This year's Winter Solstice is not the longest night ever

Dongzhi 2015 – China’s Winter Solstice Festival
Tangyuan 湯圓

Although the Chinese have been celebrating the changing seasons for well over 2,500 years (since the famous Han Dynasty) a lot about this famous festival has changed with the modern times. Many of the old customs have drifted into obscurity, but families still take time off to relax and reconnect, sing songs and celebrate their heritage. Visitors can often see families gathered at temples giving offerings to the ancestors. Plus those with Chinese family or friends might even be able to join in on the Dongzhi parties and feasts. However, depending on where one is in the East, the festival could look a bit different.

Singaporeans celebrate by eating the traditional tangyuan, but dress it up with pandan leaves and ginger. Malaysian Chinese simply host friends and family for a meal, while Hong Kong citizens give gifts and dress up in new clothes. The Taiwanese show up everyone and steam nine-layer rice cakes in the shape of turtles, cows, ducks, etc and then eat themselves into food comas (literally, the practice is based on animal hibernation). Foodies, you may have just found Valhalla.

Happy Dongzhi, happy winter solstice festival!

What do TSL, BBC and MOM have in common?

Singapore ministry criticised over 'migrant gaffe' Facebook post
This photo posted by the Singapore Ministry of Manpower showed Minister of State Teo Ser Luck lying on a bed of a migrant construction worker

Singapore's Ministry of Manpower has drawn criticism on social media over a post about foreign workers. A Facebook album uploaded to the ministry's official page featured a photograph of Minister of State Teo Ser Luck lying on a worker's dormitory bed.

It was accompanied by the caption: "I learnt that some workers prefer to sleep without a mattress as they are used to it back in their home country".

Mr Teo denied making that comment when contacted by the BBC. In a later statement the ministry said an administrator wrote the caption, not Mr Teo.

Teo Ser Luck did not make comments on foreign worker dorm beds: MOM
A controversial comment on beds at a foreign workers' dormitory, was not made by the Minister of State for Manpower Teo Ser Luck, his ministry said on Friday (Dec 18)

The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) issued a clarification on Facebook after the post went viral. It showed a photo of Mr Teo on a bed without a mattress, along with caption: "Quite comfy! I learnt that some workers prefer to sleep without a mattress as they are used to it back in their home country. They find it more comfortable and cooler too!"

The post was slammed as "insensitive" and a "joke" by some, although some praised Mr Teo for trying to at least trying to experience for himself how foreign workers live.

MOM said the Facebook post and captions were put up by an administrator for its Facebook page. "MOS Teo did not make those comments. We regret the unintended implications, and any misunderstanding that the post has caused. To avoid further misrepresentation, we have removed all the captions from the Facebook post," it said in a statement on Friday.

'Mattress' comment was by MOM Facebook administrator

The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) has clarified that Minister of State for Manpower Teo Ser Luck did not make the comments that were attributed to him on its Facebook page.

The photo showed Mr Teo, on a bed with no mattress in a dormitory, with the caption: "I learnt that some workers prefer to sleep without a mattress as they are used to it back in their home country."

An MOM spokesman told The New Paper last night that the photo and the accompanying caption, which was posted on Dec 11, were put up by the MOM Facebook administrator.

Teo Ser Luck deny making “comfortable without mattress” gaffe

After being exposed and embarrassed domestically and internationally (see BBC report here), Minister Teo Ser Luck now denies that he made the gaffe saying it is comfortable to sleep without mattress.

The original Facebook post which went viral after States Times Review posted the article, has since been censored and removed by the Ministry of Manpower. It is understood a tsunami of angry comments were hitting out at the PAP Minister for being a wayang (political antic), and the authorities found it easier to delete the post instead of deleting and censoring each comment that criticized the Minister.

In a follow-up post, the Ministry of Manpower now claimed that Minister Teo Ser Luck did not make the comment. During the time when the post was still available, Minister Teo Ser Luck tried to defend himself and hence tacitly acknowledged that the offending caption was his. The Ministry of Manpower is now blaming the page administrator for the fiasco.

Minister of State for Manpower Teo Ser Luck has come under fire online over a photograph of him lying on a bed in a foreign worker dormitory.

The photograph was posted on the Ministry of Manpower’s (MOM) Facebook page on 11 December, as part of an album called “MOS Teo Ser Luck’s visit to Dorms and a Recreation Centre”. Teo had visited the dormitories as part of an event to mark International Migrants Day.

The photo was accompanied by this caption: “Quite comfy! I learnt that some workers prefer to sleep without a mattress as they are used to it back in their home country. They find it more comfortable and cooler too!“

Facebook Post By Minister Teo Ser Luck Goes Viral On Int’l Migrants Day For All The Wrong Reasons

Another day, another Facebook post from a minister that outrages Singaporeans everywhere. On International Migrants Day, the Ministry of Manpower organised an event that involved Minister Teo Ser Luck taking a turn around migrant workers’ dormitories. Apart from publishing blogposts and writing up Facebook posts to commemorate the day, Minister Teo was also quoted as saying this:
“I learnt that some workers prefer to sleep without a mattress as they are used to it back in their home country.”
Many Singaporeans replied in anger, saying that his comment was “insensitive”, and that he was stuck in an “ivory tower”, unable to empathise with migrant workers. These same sentiments were echoed in the Cardboard Auntie debacle, when Minister Tan Chuan Jin was criticised for saying that some older folk were treating cardboard collecting as a “form of exercise”, while excluding the well-known fact that others do it as their only means of income.

MOM: MINISTER TEO SER LUCK DIDN'T MAKE DISTASTEFUL MIGRANT COMMENT, OUR FB ADMIN DID IT

We understand that many of you have expressed concerns over a Facebook photo featuring MOS Teo Ser Luck visiting a dormitory

The Facebook post, including the captions, were put up by our MOM Facebook Administrator. MOS Teo did not make those comments. We regret the unintended implications, and any misunderstanding that the post has caused. To avoid further misrepresentation, we have removed all the captions from the Facebook post.

Foreign workers have contributed much to the development of Singapore. The visit to the dormitory is to show our appreciation, and our care and concern for their wellbeing from housing to food, and exercise to entertainment in their dormitories. It is unfortunate it was over shadowed by this turn of events

Miss Universe 2015 Gaffe

Steve Harvey Crowns The Wrong Miss Universe In Awkward Live TV Gaffe

For two whole minutes on Sunday night, Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutierrez celebrated what she believed to be her victory at the 2015 Miss Universe Pageant. With tears in her eyes and a gleaming crown on her head, she waved and smiled at the crowd, her national flag gripped in her hand.

But Gutierrez’s celebration was suddenly, and awkwardly, interrupted by pageant host Steve Harvey. Harvey, it turned out, had announced the wrong contestant. Miss Philippines Pia Wurtzbach had, in fact, won the crown.

“Uh, I have to apologize,” a visibly-unsettled Harvey told the still-cheering crowd. “The first runner-up is Colombia. Miss Universe 2015 is Philippines.”

Was Miss Universe gaffe a publicity stunt?
Conspiracy theories abound after Steve Harvey claims the teleprompter told him Miss Colombia, as she tearfully says 'everything happens for a reason'

Steve Harvey's embarrassing failure to name the correct winner of Sunday's Miss Universe pageant was just a little too perfect for some viewers, who are now crying foul and claiming the whole thing was a well-orchestrated publicity stunt.

On her part, Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutierrez seemed to be gracious in her defeat, saying with admirable equanimity during a brief backstage interview that 'everything happens for a reason.'

Dabbing her eyes with a napkin, the first Miss Universe runner-up said in broken English she was happy with all she had accomplished and thanked her supporters for voting for her.

IN one of the most unexpected endings to a Miss Universe final, Miss Colombia was mistakenly crowned as the winner. The host had accidentally read out the wrong name.

His mistake meant one of the world’s most watched beauty pageants ended in shock and tears as Miss Colombia was demoted to being the first runner-up, and Miss Philippines was declared the official winner.

For around 90 seconds, Miss Columbia Ariadna Gutierrez was crowned the winner and had been given her flowers. She was basking in her moment of glory on stage.

Blinking back tears of joy through thick mascara, it was Ariadna Gutierrez Arevalo's crowning glory of her career in beauty pageantry. Standing on stage in Las Vegas, shimmering in her silver sequined gown, Miss Colombia was declared the Miss Universe winner to rapturous applause.

As the disco lights flashed and celebratory pop music pounded, Miss Gutierrez beamed for the cameras and cradled her bouquet. But she would soon be in tears again - for a different reason.

Her moment of glory lasted just two minutes - as the host admitted that the wrong winner had been named and Miss Gutierrez was unceremoniously stripped of her tiara.
