Airline's Dress code for boarding a plane?

Two girls barred from United flight for wearing leggings
United Airlines is responding to fierce backlash after a series of viral tweets on March 26 that allege United prohibited two young girls from boarding a flight in Denver because they were wearing leggings. (Reuters)

A United Airlines gate agent barred two girls from boarding a flight Sunday morning because the girls were wearing leggings.

Another girl who was wearing gray leggings had to change before she was allowed to board the flight from Denver to Minneapolis, a witness said.

“She’s forcing them to change or put dresses on over leggings or they can’t board,” Shannon Watts, who was at a gate at Denver International Airport, said on Twitter. “Since when does @united police women’s clothing?”

United Airlines caught up in leggings row
The company's response on Twitter has also been heavily criticised

United Airlines has been heavily criticised on social media after two girls were reportedly barred from flying for wearing leggings.

The incident happened on a flight from Denver to Minneapolis on Sunday morning, activist Shannon Watts said. United said the girls were travelling on a special pass, for employees and their guests, which has a dress code.

It has since clarified that all regular, paying customers are welcome to wear leggings.

Airline faces wrath of leggings wearers in boarding flap
N.J. United said on Monday, March 27, 2017, that regular-paying fliers are welcome to wear leggings aboard its flights, even though two teenage girls were barred by a gate agent from boarding a flight from Denver to Minneapolis Sunday because of their attire. (Mel Evans, File/Associated Press)

Don’t mess with our stretch, United Airlines, or risk the wrath of leggings lovers. The social media matter of The Kids in Leggings vs. United snapped to the surface Sunday. That’s when one Shannon Watts said on Twitter she had witnessed a gate agent refusing to let two girls board a flight from Denver to Minneapolis because of their leggings.

The incident, with United’s Twitter account chiming in, rolled right on through to Monday, prompting debate on whether leggings are “pants.” That especially goes for women and girls and whether the United dress code for people on standby who are availing themselves of free passes, as these girls were, has perhaps not kept pace with the elevation of stretchy pants from gym and yoga garb to more broadly acceptable.

Or are leggings more like women’s stockings and therefore inappropriate for plane travel when worn as pants, as one Facebook user argued — or is this a better comparison, as suggested by another: “It’s like going to a baseball game on a player’s tickets and doing something against the rules, right?”

United Airlines Gets Tripped Up By Leggings

United Airlines has every right to decide how employees and their friends and family using their travel passes dress, as Forbes contributor Christine Negroni writes.

And revenue passengers have every right to object.

Yesterday, on March 25, three girls were denied entry to a United Airlines flight from Denver to Minneapolis. The girls were wearing leggings. One girl, reported to be 10 years old by Liam Stack of the New York Times, put a dress on over the leggings and was admitted on the flight. The other two girls, who were teenagers according to an eyewitness, Shannon Watts, were denied boarding of the plane.

United Airlines to customers: ‘Your leggings are welcome!’
In the aftermath of two young girls being told they couldn’t board a United Continental Holdings UAL, +0.65% flight from Denver to Minneapolis unless they changed their clothes, the airline issued a clear statement Monday: “To our customers — your leggings are welcome!”

On Sunday, a United Airlines gate agent stopped two girls from boarding a flight from Denver to Minneapolis for wearing leggings, according to a live account of the debacle by Shannon Watts, a fellow passenger and founder of Moms Demand Action, a grassroots movement to end gun violence. “She’s forcing them to change or put dresses on over leggings or they can’t board,” she tweeted. “Since when does @united police women’s clothing?” (United said there is a dress code for United pass travelers, employees and family of employees who travel on heavily discounted or free tickets. It states such travelers should be “well-groomed, neat, clean and in good taste.”)

Don’t miss: The worst thing about flying? These people

After the debacle went viral Sunday, the airline sought to explain the confluence of events: the stricter dress codes for “pass” travelers, the appearance that two young girls were singled out and a passenger tweeting the events as they happened. “All employees and pass riders are considered representatives of United,” United spokesman Jonathan Guerin said Monday. “And like most companies, we have a dress code that we ask employees and pass riders to follow. The passengers this morning were United pass riders and not in compliance with our dress code for company benefit travel.” Regular customers, he added, are not subject to such rules.

Why do we dress so badly when we fly?
United Airlines is under siege on Twitter after airline employees reportedly stopped two young girls from boarding because they were wearing leggings. USA TODAY

Twitter exploded over the weekend with negative comments directed at United Airlines when a gate agent refused to board two young girls flying for free on a “pass,” a common perk offered to airline employees and their dependents. The offense? Wearing leggings, which, the employees should have known, contravene United’s published policy concerning free travel.

I, too, have been denied boarding for a fashion offense. For two years, I flew on passes on Eastern Air Lines (remember them?) as a contractor for the Shuttle. Every month I’d be handed a stack of coupons that allowed me to fly standby in first class anywhere in the world Eastern flew. Included with these was a slip of paper stating the company’s dress code: Men had to wear a suit and tie; ladies had to wear a dress. One day I showed up for boarding and forgot to wear a tie. The gate agent put me in economy class. When I protested he scolded me, “The way you’re dressed you don’t even deserve to fly at all!” The same thing happened years later on British Airways, but that time I had a tie in my carry-on bag.

That was decades ago, but airlines still enforce dress codes, albeit watered down, for employees and their dependents. And sometimes, for regular passengers as well.

Off limits? Females and their leggings. United's dress code needs an update

Chicago-based United Airlines made headlines over the weekend, but probably not the type it wanted. Maybe you read about it: LeggingGate.

A United Airlines agent in Denver on Sunday morning barred two teenage girls from boarding a flight to Minnesota because they were wearing leggings. A third passenger, estimated to be about 10 years old according to observers, was able to satisfy the agent by donning a dress over her leggings.

The no-leggings rule applies only to employees or to travelers using a United Airlines perk — often called a buddy pass — that allows friends and family of employees to fly for free or at a discount. A spokesperson explained that those travelers are representatives of United Airlines when they fly, so they're expected to follow the company's dress code. Even teenagers and little girls in leggings, apparently. Leggings that you'll find females wearing ... everywhere. Tattered or torn jeans, flip flops, tight clothing, short skirts and bare midriffs also are no-nos.

United Airlines got slapped around on social media Sunday when it barred a pair of teen girls in leggings from boarding a flight, but the reality is airlines still have dress codes, at least for some passengers.

Enforcing them can be tricky, though, as United Airlines found out when a gate agent didn't let the two girls get on a Sunday morning flight from Denver to Minneapolis.

When a traveller who saw the incident criticised the airline's move on Twitter, United responded by tweeting it had the right to refuse passengers who are "not properly clothed," citing its passenger contract.

United Airlines under fire over "Leggings-gate"

United Airlines has been swept up in a social media firestorm, being called "Leggings-gate."

The company is responding to fierce backlash after a series of viral tweets over the weekend that alleged United prohibited two young girls from boarding a flight in Denver because they were wearing leggings. A United spokesman says the two girls were special pass travellers, riders who are the friends or relatives of employees who get free or discounted air travel.

The company says those riders have a more formal dress code and the two girls would not have been turned away for wearing leggings had they been paying customers.

5 fashions that we'd ban on planes after United Airlines bars passengers from wearing leggings

United Airlines caused a storm on Twitter after two young girls were banned from wearing leggings on one of their flights.

Firstly, can we just begin by saying that as we haven’t seen the actual leggings in question, it’s probably not fair on us to comment on whether or not they should have been banned. But it does sound quite bizarre. And not anywhere near as offensive as a LOT of other things we've seen on aeroplanes.

Anyway it started a big big debate about all the the other more serious 'fashion crimes' committed by passengers that we'd quite like to ban:
  • Flip-flops
  • Tracksuits
  • High heels
  • Crocs
  • Caps

"I have flown united before with literally no pants on. Just a top as a dress. Next time I will wear only jeans and a scarf," Teigen wrote on Twitter.

The airline reportedly refused to allow the child and two others on their flight from Denver to Minneapolis for not meeting their dress code. Leggings on a plane? Not so horrifying, say etiquette experts

You've heard of snakes on a plane? (Cue the shrieking.) Now the latest horror is ... leggings on a plane?

But wait, not so fast, and cut out that tweet-shrieking, please. Despite what you might have heard, thanks to clumsy tweeting by United Airlines, leggings are not verboten on its airplanes, at least for paying passengers.

Because, duh, leggings are perfectly appropriate attire, not to mention perfectly comfortable attire, in this era of air travel as cattle drive-turned-security nightmare.

What Travelers Need to Know About Dress Codes on Major U.S. Airlines
United Airlines has been receiving backlash after barring two teenage girls who were wearing leggings from boarding a flight on Sunday morning, as the leggings did not meet the airline’s dress code policies

A fellow traveler, Shannon Watts, posted about the occurrence on Twitter over the weekend.

According to company spokesman Jonathan Guerin, the two customers were traveling with a companion and were therefore under the airline’s pass traveler category, which typically applies to free or highly discounted airline tickets for airline employees, their friends, and their family members.

For this reason, the airline's policy can have its own set of dress code regulations that differ from rules and regulations for customers booking a regular ticket.

THE OFFICIAL UNITED AIRLINES DRESS CODE

United Airlines barred two teenage girls from boarding a flight on Sunday morning and required a child to change into a dress after a gate agent decided the leggings they were wearing were inappropriate.

The United Airlines dress code outlines corporate expectations for clothing worn by our passengers aboard the aircraft. Passengers should keep in mind that, when we are airborne, we are representing United Airlines to other planes, clouds, and sometimes the sun. Your appearance can create a positive or negative in-flight experience; for instance, if any birds catch a glimpse of your inappropriate garments, they might become upset, and we’ve all seen “Sully” by now, right? Here are some guidelines to help avoid that eventuality.

General Policy:
  • When we’ve made our ascent to around thirty-six thousand feet, we are close to heaven, and should dress accordingly.
  • For women, this means refraining from showing cleavage, too much leg, or the outline of a human body. An example of appropriate women’s wear would be a baggy tuxedo that looks like it belonged to a nineteen-thirties tap dancer, or a full hazmat suit.
  • For men, this means covering genitalia.
  • Boys under the age of eighteen will not be asked to adhere to a dress code.
  • Girls over the age of ten are considered adult women, and must dress accordingly.
  • Jewelry is strictly prohibited unless it is a man’s Rolex watch (the kind that shows a lot of time zones).

Leggings
A woman wearing white leggings with a floral design

Leggings are a type of skin-tight garment that covers the legs and may be worn by both men and women. Originally, leggings were two separate garments, one for each leg. In contemporary usage, leggings refers to tight, form-fitting trousers that extend from the waist to the ankles, although some are shorter; some leggings are stirrupped. Leggings are worn to keep a person's legs warm, as protection from chafing during an activity such as exercise, or as a decorative or fashion garment. Leggings are worn by both men and women during exercise but usually only by women at other times.

Modern leggings are typically made from a blend of lycra (also known as spandex), with cotton, polyester, or nylon, but can also be made from wool, silk, and other materials. Leggings are available in a multitude of colors and decorative designs. Leggings are traditionally worn partially covered by a garment such as a skirt, a large shirt, shorts, or fully covered by an outer garment, such as a full length skirt. Wearing leggings without additional covering is debated, and is not considered "proper attire" by some.

Leggings in the form of skin-tight trousers, a tighter version of the capris ending at mid-calf or near ankle length, made its way into fashion in the 1960s and were worn with a large belt and slip-on high heels or ballet flat-styled shoes.

Poll: Should United Airlines modify its employee policy on leggings?
After getting asked to change, the girls reportedly had to take a later flight

United Airlines is facing some tough questions after two teenage girls weren't allowed to get on a flight due to their attire.

ABC News reports the girls -- who were supposed to board a plane from Denver and head to Minneapolis -- weren't allowed on the flight because they apparently violated a United "dress code policy for company benefit travel" which specifically bans spandex or leggings.

The program gives United employees and their families an opportunity for free travel on a standby basis.
