Euphemia Lee Facebook: 3 June

At lunch today at JEM, I had the gross misfortune of crossing paths with this disgusting, vile swine posing as a human being.

The cleaner misunderstood her grunting when he asked if he could clear her tray for affirmation. She abruptly exploded into cursing and violent upper body actions. She then told him that he should go and die and should not be given a coffin. She then continued eating until her husband returned, after which she insisted her husband drag the old man back to their table to APOLOGISE to her.

It was then that the manager of the cleaning company stepped in to explain that said old man was BOTH DEAF AND MUTE. In the video is what ensued... In a nutshell, her saying that old and disabled people should not be given employment nor forgiven for their mistakes. And that they should just be beggars and wait for the government to feed them.

In her defence, she said she had found something "dirty" in her food and had been planning to take a picture of it as evidence when the cleaner tried to clear it.
  • "I was very angry because I told him not to take it, but he went ahead. At that point, I didn't even know he is deaf," she said.
  • "I admit I had used harsh words. I didn't mean to scold him with those words."
Ms Fong added that she was on flu and cough medication that afternoon and may not have been "thinking straight".

Woman who screamed at deaf and mute cleaner apologises, but says she is not entirely at fault: 'I was sick, and he had no tag to say he was disabled'

According to the witness Euphemia Lee's account, the cleaner had "misunderstood [the woman's] grunting when he asked if he could clear her tray for affirmation."
She apparently then started cursing and yelling things such as "that he should go and die and should not be given a coffin," said Lee.

"She then continued eating until her husband returned, after which she insisted her husband drag the old man back to their table to APOLOGISE to her."

She also said "that he should go and die and should not be given a coffin."

A video uploaded by netizen Euphemia Lee shows that Madam Fong berated the cleaner loudly. According to Ms Lee, when Madam Fong learned that he could not hear or speak, she told his supervisor that he was better off being a "beggar".

In her interview with 'Shin Min Daily' News, Madam Fong said that she had said those words in a fit of anger, and now feels sorry for it. She also claimed that she had spoken to the cleaner's supervisor and come to a consensus with him over the incident.

Nonetheless, Madam Fong said she was not apologising for the entire incident, insisting that she was not entirely at fault.

Woman who berated deaf-mute cleaner at JEM apologises

Shin Min Daily News, shared in their Facebook page that the woman who berated the deaf-mute cleaner at JEM has apologised for her actions, explaining that she was unwell on that day.

Shin Min identified the woman as a 37-year-old executive. This is the first time the woman, believed to Alice Fong, spoke about the incident. Fong said that she had gone to eat at a restaurant in JEM shopping centre with her husband on June 4 at about 12pm, and that she was down with a flu at that time.

Fong had taken half-day off from work on that day as she was feeling unwell. She had also noticed “something dirty” in the food she had finished eating, and wanted to take a picture of it to complain. That was the moment when the 64-year-old cleaner came to clear her plate. Fong said that she tried to tell him “no”, but the cleaner “would not listen”.

Food rage lady gives her side of the story, says she had a cold that day

Screamer Alice Fong says sorry to cleaning manager, cleaner

FOODCOURT screamer Alice Fong has apologised to the operations manager of the cleaning company and the deaf-mute cleaner, so The New Paper reported today. She rang the manager, known only as Steven, to do so. Presumably, she asked him to send her apologies along to his worker. “I admit I used harsh words. I didn’t mean to scold him with those words,” she said, adding that her flu and cough medication could have led her to “not thinking straight”.

If you haven’t caught up with the kerfuffle, here’s the video. The short story is that Ms Fong was upset that the cleaner didn’t understand that she didn’t want her tray cleared as she wanted to take a picture of the food because she found “something dirty” in it. “At that point, I didn’t even know he is deaf,” she told TNP. But the video showed that she carried on with her tirade even though Steven tried to placate her. Netizens have gotten all riled up because of her contemptuous and mean-spirited remarks, including how she didn’t care if the cleaner was deaf, and that he should take to begging and die without a coffin.

If Netizens out for blood are wondering if she would lose her job the way British expatriate Anton Casey and National Trades Union Congress Amy Cheong did, they will be disappointed. She said her company, which she did not name, has said the furore wouldn’t affect her work.

Alice Fong threatens to sue netizens who make disparaging comments about her

The Chinese media reported that Alice Fong does not consider herself to be vicious. She said that she involves herself in (grassroots) activities like making dumplings to give to elderly. She is now considering making police reports against netizens who have said bad things about her.

She said, “My conscience is clear. I continue to go to work. But with regard to the online CSI done by netizens and the threats they made, I am thinking of making a police report just in case. I am not concerned of other people’s views. Singapore has laws.”

Ms Fong also stressed that she attended the grassroots activities as an individual. She said that she is not a grassroots leader nor a volunteer. “Some people said I am vicious but I have participated in grassroots activities and made dumplings for the elderly to eat.”

Netizens claim woman who verbally abused deaf-mute cleaner had bad rep with property agents

The woman who verbally abused a deaf and mute cleaner at the Jem shopping mall food court on Friday (Jun 3), is apparently someone well known to property agents in a bad way.

According to a post made on a Facebook page called Tributes to Dr Goh Keng Swee, the site administrator who identified himself as a property agent said that Madam Fong and her husband were alleged "phony buyers"  who bought two to four properties from "Propnex and Huttons agents".

He also claimed that all of Madam Fong's husband's cheques "bounced" as the accounts had already been "closed for his SC and OCBC cheque books".

Property agents allegedly had bad experiences with Alice Fong and her husband
A Facebook user Dave Teo commented in the Facebook link of our story, ‘RC denies affiliation with woman who berated dumb cleaner at JEM but FB shows she was an active RC participant’, about the bad experience he had with the woman who berated the deaf-mute cleaner at JEM and her husband.

He identified the couple and said that they go around show flat and place 5 percent deposit, and after the ‘closing’ ask the agent to treat them for dinner. He said that they took him to a restaurant and ordered food which cost him a few hundred dollars. The cheque the couple issued however, eventually bounced.

Several others who commented on Dave’s comment suggested that the woman and her husband would do anything to score a free meal.

Lynette Ong's account of what happened that day

Just to clarify (I was at the scene and had the privilege of having my nice lunch ruined by the lady as well...

1stly, her tray was never taken from her,,, The cleaner merely touched it before she completely lost it and started screaming...

2ndly, she was verbally attacking the cleaner but the cleaner walked away immediately... There was no confrontation between the lady and the cleaner... So to the general public, it looked like a mentally unsound person screaming and shouting... Quite honestly it was rather scary and I Guess that everyone thought that she would stop once she was done shouting (which she did... and eventually went back to her food)...

Woman berates deaf-mute cleaner at JEM foodcourt

In a Facebook video uploaded by netizen Euphemia Lee that went viral with more than 1.1million views and 25,000 shares, a lady was seen at the JEM foodcourt berating a deaf and mute cleaner.

According to Lee, the incident had happened after the deaf cleaner had mistaken her “grunting” as a a signal to clear her tray which led to the lady losing her temper. Even after the manager of the cleaning company explained the situation, the lady allegedly became more unreasonable and cursed that the disabled people should not be given employment.

According to a subsequent post from alternative news site The Alternative View (TAV), the lady was reported to be a PAP grassroots leader at the Nee Soon branch, Alice Fong.

Raging woman in red reminds us that we are a long way from being an inclusive, gracious society
  • “I don’t want to understand! My food leh!”
  • “If he’s deaf, then don’t work! Go home and sleep! Wait for the government to feed him! Go and be a beggar!”
That’s what a raging aunty in red screamed in a video that has now gone viral. It was a video taken at JEM during lunch time by Facebook user Ephemia Lee. Apparently a cleaner misunderstood a customer’s “grunts” when he asked her if he could clear her tray. As a result, he cleared the tray even even though the lady wasn’t actually done eating.

The raging lady in red then went rabid. Like completely bat shit crazy.

That Singaporean woman who berated a deaf and dumb cleaner at a food court

This woman is not a troll. Neither is she a “disgusting, vile swine posing as a human being”. She is just a sad product of elitism in Singapore.2

She is not the first and won’t be the last.

Many Singaporeans behave this way. I encountered a similar situation a few years back at a restaurant at NEX mall. I did not record a video, but you can read the full retelling of the encounter here.

Woman's behaviour might be nasty, but should deaf and mute cleaner wear a tag?

"I told him 'don't take it away' three times but he did not hear me. Instead, he stared at me," she said, adding that she was having a flu that day and was not feeling well.

"I then scolded him and told him to go be a beggar -- I couldn't tell if he was disabled as he was not wearing a tag."

Insisting that she was not a 'bad or evil person', Mrs Feng also said she was not the only party at fault and called for Ah Xing to wear a tag so that customers would know that he is deaf and mute.

From Singapore’s Alice Fong To Taiwan’s Hung Su-chu (洪素珠)

Alice Fong incident will likely be a non-event after a few months. The PAP social engineering machinery, through both mainstream media and social media, will have the capability to accomplish the job. However, will the political motivated ‘hate and social divide’ go away? Most likely not.

So do the DPP in Taiwan.

Relatively speaking our ‘hate’ situation is still not as bad as in Taiwan. However, the Taiwan experience serves as a reminder to Singaporeans. Political parties, searching for power like DPP or fighting to remain in power like the PAP or UNMO, will always like to engage in ‘hate’ and ‘social divide’ political campaigns.

Tan Chuan-Jin criticises woman who berated foodcourt cleaner

Minister for Social and Family Development Tan Chuan-jin said on Friday (10 June) that the woman who was filmed berating a deaf cleaner at the JEM foodcourt should not have behaved in such a manner.

“Whether you have flu or not, or if a person is disabled or not, one shouldn’t have behaved in the way the woman did. Respect our fellow workers,” Tan said in a post on his Facebook page.

Tan also said that he had visited the part-time cleaner, Png Lye Heng, at JEM and found the latter to be in good spirits.
