Let's hope you don't suffer from vertigo

The name alone indicates the crazy mountainside parties which take place at France's infamous apres-ski joint, La Folie Douce in Val Thorens.

Expect saxophonists, MCs, champagne showers and plenty of beautiful people dancing on tables at the bar 2600m up. Just be sure to watch out after a few jagerbombs in your icy ski boots

The venue is pretty easy on the eye - and so are the local New Yorkers at the  rooftop area at Gansevoort Park Avenue Hotel in the Nomad neighbourhood.

There are multiple bars, plunge pool - complete with 1940s pinup - and alfresco fireplaces. Cocktails are the go here and you can soak them up with retro American snacks such as peanut butter and jelly ice cream sandwiches

The maritime-themed Captain Hostel Bar in Shanghai, China, has legendary status for the many backpackers and travellers who visit it

Unrivalled views of the Bund and cheap (ish) drinks await those who take the dodgy lift up there. Picture: Captain Hostel Shanghai

The bar has a romantic feel, but the vibe is eclectic with patrons getting involved in activities such as rooftop tennis with the help of the bar's own Wii console

230 Fifth bar, NYC. At 2043sq m, this is one massive rooftop bar. New York’s largest rooftop bar features a garden, palm trees, fountains and Penthouse Lounge and one of the best views of the Empire State Building

Rooftop bar is a Melbourne institution that plays host to open-air cinema in the summer as well as live bands and markets. It can get pretty crowded up there.
